I’m not a futurist or a magician, but like many of us, I think about how AI will influence humanity in the coming years. New tools and products emerge every day, making it difficult for most people to keep up with the "AI" market. One of the more dystopian scenarios people imagine is something like the rise of Skynet from the famous Terminator movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
As Schwarzenegger himself has said, "That is such brilliant writing, because now—after all those decades—it has become a reality. So it's not anymore fantasy or kind of futuristic. It is here today."
But are we really facing a "Skynet" scenario? Are we entering a truly dangerous era for humanity, or is this the beginning of a brighter future for all of us?
Perhaps it won't start with an AI war but with a shift in power dynamics. Imagine a world where AI controls finance, energy, and even our beloved internet. What if we can no longer access Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook? Is this our future, or is there another path?
The real impact of AI is still unknown, which is why I turned to ChatGPT for some insights.
Projected Impacts of AI on Humans Over the Next 10 Years:
A graph by ChatGPT shows that while the positive impacts of AI on human life are expected to increase steadily over the next decade, negative impacts might initially rise before they begin to decrease as we address and mitigate various challenges.
Positive Effects:

Negative Effects:
The impact of AI is complex and multifaceted, bringing both significant benefits and serious risks. Whether AI will have a net positive or negative effect depends largely on how we choose to develop, regulate, and use these technologies. Responsible development, ethical guidelines, and thoughtful regulation are crucial to maximizing AI's positive impacts while minimizing its potential harms.
So, what do I think about the future?
While I’m generally optimistic, I foresee a negative impact on humans in the short term. It will take time for us to fully understand and manage this technology globally, with all its facets. But once we do, I believe AI could greatly benefit humanity. However, this is a long journey.
Why do I think AI might have a short-term negative impact?
Automation: In the next few years, we will automate many processes, and highly regulated jobs and creative may disappear, replaced by software. Why, because people want to earn money and human are happy with a low quality of entertainment. We are overwhelmed with information, so often take what we get and don't think about quality.
While new jobs will likely emerge, the challenge is that humans are often slow to adapt to new roles requiring different skills and tasks.
A century ago, it took weeks to send and receive a message. Today, technology and the world move so fast that many people have stopped trying to keep up, and it's only going to get faster. To keep pace, we either need to slow down and think more deliberately or learn to sprint continuously—something that’s unsustainable for humans, who need rest, unlike technology.
For the coming years, the biggest challenge for humanity will be our mindset and our acceptance of change.
My Wish for Everyone:
AI is coming faster than we think, and it’s deeply interconnected with every aspect of our lives. Don’t resist new technology. Instead, see it as an opportunity for humanity, but always remain aware of the potential negative effects. AI could be the key to a better future for all of us, but only if we handle it wisely.

2 个月Thanks Hannes Robier for bringing up this thread, I would like to emphasize in this discussion the fact that AI itself is nothing but a tool. I like to picture it as a superpower (imagine you had a third hand). AI isn't good or bad, it's what people do with it that makes it good or bad. Like almost any invention.

2 个月Absolutely Hannes Robier! Remeber my talk at WUC 5 years back. Humanizing Privacy! It is still relavant even today. Human-centered design is critical in AI because it ensures that technology serves people’s needs, aligns with human values, and remains inclusive. We’re at a pivotal moment where design isn’t just an add-on but a core necessity in AI development. As AI systems increasingly influence our lives, design should lead in creating ethical, user-friendly, and responsible solutions. Designers must take responsibility by advocating for transparency, fairness, and accountability in AI. By stepping up, design can guide AI toward being a force for good, ensuring that it empowers people rather than causing harm. This involves designing AI with empathy, inclusivity, and ethical considerations at every stage, from concept to deployment. Ultimately, responsible design is essential to shaping an AI-driven future that benefits everyone.

2 个月While change can be unsettling, it's also a chance for growth and improvement. The uncertainty about AI today makes me wonder how people must have felt during the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. Back then, new technologies brought big changes, creating both challenges and opportunities. Just like those times, we're now seeing a cycle of disruption and adaptation. :)
