INFLATION is on everybody's mind. It is looming large. But, this is not the first time. Back in the late 1970s - prices rose - there was an oil embargo -- so lines at the gas station were noticeable -- even to a small kid like me.
At that time, a blues group - Sugar Daddy & the Gumbo Roux - made a song - written by Earnest Jackson -- who also was the lead singer of the group. Alas, the song was never distributed and was lost to history.
But, inflation is back and thanks to the NPR PLANET MONEY's podcast team - you can now hear #inflationthesong. After receiving an anonymous cassette recording of the song and doing the investigation - the team started a record label - PLANET MONEY RECORDS just to distribute (today- streaming) and give Earnest his dream come true. (Listen here to the 2-episode podcast )
All the other bandmates went on to strong music careers - but not Earnest. He settled into a service occupation and never revisited the world of music.
INFLATION - THE SONG CHALLENGE
Now, it's time for your act of #kindness. With INFLATION-the song - streaming on services like Spotify - Earnest will get a fraction of a penny for every listen completed on the streaming services -- after 47 years of waiting for that opportunity to hear his band's music broadcasted.
Let's help the PLANET MONEY TEAM reach its goal of 5000 listens -- to deliver a few bucks to Earnest.
Maybe someone will adopt this tune as their recurring theme song for this current era of #inflation.
