The Inflated Ego on LinkedIn: A Culture to Reconsider?

The Inflated Ego on LinkedIn: A Culture to Reconsider?

LinkedIn is meant to be the ultimate professional networking platform, designed to facilitate networking, knowledge sharing, and expertise exchange. But have you noticed a concerning trend? An inflated ego culture seems to be taking hold on the platform.

As you scroll through your feed, what do you predominantly see? Self-congratulatory posts, publications aimed at flaunting the achievements of their authors, and sometimes even exaggeratedly narcissistic selfies? This relentless pursuit of recognition is turning LinkedIn into a playground for egos, rather than a space for authentic sharing and professional support.

Why is this trend concerning?

Don’t you think this culture creates a toxic competitive atmosphere? Are we truly measuring our professional success by the number of likes and comments received? Is this obsession with self-image distancing us from authenticity and the real value we bring to the professional world?

How does this impact the professional world?

Aren’t posts highlighting extraordinary achievements likely to discourage those who feel less accomplished? Can this overemphasis on ego create a sense of insecurity and low self-esteem among some members of our network?

Can we change things?

Can LinkedIn return to being a valuable space for sharing authentic successes, real achievements, and inspiring stories? How can we encourage more modest posts that focus on added value, lived experiences, and practical advice?

Shouldn’t we focus on listening, exchanging ideas, and building meaningful professional relationships rather than chasing likes?

My conclusion,

The culture of inflated ego on LinkedIn is a concerning phenomenon that deserves reflection. By emphasizing authenticity, modesty, and the real value we provide to others, we could make LinkedIn a more enriching and positive professional network.

What do you think? How can you contribute to creating a more authentic and supportive environment on LinkedIn?
