?? Canada Will Track Plastic Use, Recycling, And Production
Announced in April, Environment and Climate Change Canada announced that the country will now make producers report how much plastic they make and import through a data collection registry. The registry is to be phased in over the next few years.
?? The B.C. Government Formally Acknowledges Haida Nation Land Ownership?
A historic agreement took place between the provincial government of British Columbia and the Haida Nation in April. The agreement formally recognizes Haida land ownership across the archipelago, independent of any potential court case. However, according to the president of the Council of the Haida Nation, the nation is “still negotiating with Canada over their rights to control the waters.”

?? Indigenous-Led 'Blue Park' Marks Canadian First
The Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation has established the Gitdisdzu Lugyeks Marine Protected Area, the first Indigenous-led 'blue park' globally, recognized for outstanding marine conservation. This initiative, self-declared without awaiting Canadian government approval, aims to safeguard diverse marine life and support sustainable community practices on so-called British Columbia's central coast.
??? Book about Indigenous Sovereignty Wins Historical Writing Prize
Historian Kathleen DuVal was awarded the Cundill History Prize, valued at $104,000 CAD ($75,000 USD). The award was presented at 加拿大麦吉尔大学 for her latest work about Indigenous sovereignty, Native Nations: A Millennium in North America. The book stood out for its use of “documentation to look at issues of power and fights for sovereignty and self-determination in the face of colonialism.”
?? 22 Indigenous Governments in the Northwest Territories Sign Historic Conservation Agreement
The conservation agreement, signed in Behchok?? First Nation in November, means that 22 Indigenous communities in the so-called Northwest Territories will receive over $375 million over the next 10 years, starting in 2025, to support Indigenous-led climate research, eco-tourism, and other related activities and programming. This is one of the largest Indigenous-led conservation efforts in the world.?

??New Nature-Based Education Comes to Maritimes
Parents in so-called Halifax started a new program in August, focused on nature-based education after seeing the benefits of children being out in nature. The program takes lessons from “Indigenous land-based learning models” and “Scandinavian forest schools that have outdoor classrooms all year round.”

The federal government passed legislation in June that will foster the creation of sustainable jobs and support communities across so-called Canada by helping the workforce gain necessary skills, training, and tools to fill new sustainable job opportunities. The Act is meant to ensure accountability, transparency, and engagement to create sustainable jobs and support workers/communities in so-called Canada in the shift to a net-zero economy.?

??$335 Million Investment to Build a Sustainable Economy in B.C.'s Great Bear Sea
In June, a $335 million investment in the Great Bear Sea aimed to support Indigenous-led conservation was announced. The investment will create 3,000 jobs and generate $750 million over 20 years. The project will also involve 17 First Nations and the Canadian government, focusing on renewable energy, sustainable fisheries, and marine protected areas.
??Local Bike Shops Prioritizes Community and Repair
Our Community Bikes , a local bike shop in so-called Vancouver, has “kept more than 10,000 bicycles out of landfills.” The shop focuses on repairing old bikes and encouraging the community to keep the city bike-friendly.
??Youth Across So-Called Canada Had Their Say on What a National Framework for Environmental Learning (NFEL) Should Look Like
Over 300 youth voiced their thoughts and opinions on environmental learning between May and July 2024. Youth respondents shared that they want a NFEL that is inclusive, locally relevant, and supportive of high-quality environmental learning across the country.?
??New Bee Species Discovered in what is currently British Columbia and Alberta
In so-called British Columbia, 483 species of bees had previously been discovered. In August, 19 new species of bees were identified, with the help of both citizen scientists and professionals. Biologists from universities across the western provinces are studying the newly-discovered species, trying to see what this means for climate change.
?? Nine Wealthy Families and Foundations Pledge $405 Million to Fund Climate-Related Projects
Nine wealthy families and foundations made a pledge through the Climate Champions Initiative in November. According to CBC, these groups are pledging a “total of $405 million over the next decade to help combat climate change.”
