Infection Control – The Unsung Hero of Modern IEQ (Part 3 of a Multi-Part Series)

Hey there, Pete Ferrante here, back to hit you with another round of knowledge in the ever-evolving world of Indoor Environmental Quality. In this installment, we're shining the spotlight on infection control. Forget Marvel; this is the real unsung hero in the line-up of IEQ components!

The New Kid on the Block

Infection control isn’t exactly new, but it's never been this cool before. We're talking rock-star-level prominence. COVID-19 spurred a renaissance of sorts, amplifying the importance of infection control in our daily lives, be it in offices, restaurants, or the grocery store down the road.

Beyond Health and Safety

Yes, health and safety are at the core of infection control, but it’s also about optics and perception. If you’re a property manager or owner, you're well aware that a visible commitment to cleanliness is essential for attracting and retaining tenants, employees, and customers. It’s a psychological comfort, knowing that you’re in a space that values your health.

The Trinity: Cleaning, Sanitizing, Disinfecting

These terms often get lumped together, but let’s break it down:

  • Cleaning: This is your good ol’ soap and water approach. It removes dirt and some germs but doesn't kill them. Think of cleaning as the opening act for the main events: sanitizing and disinfecting.
  • Sanitizing: Takes things up a notch by reducing the bacterial count. For example, alcohol-based hand rubs can minimize germs effectively. It's excellent for routine maintenance, especially in high-traffic areas.
  • Disinfecting: The big guns. We’re talking about chemical solutions, that annihilate bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. It's your go-to for high-risk surfaces like doorknobs or elevator buttons.

In Canada, all disinfectants must have a DIN (Drug Identification Number) and be registered with Health Canada. Look for it on your disinfectant chemicals – No DIN, No Bueno!

It's Not Just What, but How

Technique matters. Poor application can render even the strongest disinfectant ineffective. Focus on dwell time, surface compatibility, and the safety of cleaning agents. Make sure you’re using the right tools for the job. Don’t cut corners unless you want to end up back at square one.

Ventilation and Filtration

Oh yes, they have a role here too. Good air circulation is a must and can dissipate airborne pathogens, while filters can trap particles that carry germs. The HVAC system isn't just a workhorse for IAQ; it’s also an infection control champion.

Automation and Technology

Welcome to the 21st century! UV robots, automated sprayers, and IoT-enabled monitoring systems are some of the tech tools that can make infection control more effective and less labor-intensive. It’s the Jetsons era for infection control, folks!

The Future is Proactive

It's not about reaction anymore; it’s about prevention. Innovations like a Microbe Shield, a long-lasting surface protectant, work continuously to minimize microbial activity. That’s right; we’re moving from firefighting to fire prevention.

Your Role in Infection Control

We all have a part to play. Compliance and commitment to protocols are essential for infection control measures to succeed. Keep yourself and your team updated on the latest products, technologies, and guidelines.

Parting Words

So, there you have it. Infection control is no longer the invisible force in the background. It’s taking center stage, redefining our approach to health and safety in shared spaces. If this whetted your appetite for more knowledge, I'm all ears and just a message away.

Up next in this series, we'll tackle more components of IEQ. Until then, keep it clean and carry on!

Yours in Health & Well-Being,
