Infantry to Industry: Navigating The Tech Terrain

Happy Friday, Allegiant warriors! As December rolls in, bringing the close of one year and the anticipation of another, it’s time for our First Civ Div Safety Brief. This week, I want to talk about resilience, and a personal story from my early civilian days that might just resonate with you.

Transitioning from the military, especially from an infantry background, to a civilian career can be like landing on a different planet. My first encounter with this new world was in IT recruitment – a field as foreign to me as the technology I was barely able to use.

Picture this: an infantry Marine, more familiar with tactical maneuvers and weapons nomenclature than tech lingo, stepping into the complex realm of IT recruitment. My task? To match tech-savvy candidates with specialized IT roles. The problem? My own tech expertise was limited to, well, basic computer skills.

My first few days were… let’s call it a blurr. I was grappling with jargon that sounded like a foreign language, trying to understand roles that were as clear as mud, and making calls to candidates who probably wondered if I was from a different universe. I remember one conversation where I confused a software developer with a network engineer – the silence on the other end of the line was deafening!

But here's where the resilience kicked in. Instead of retreating, I dove in headfirst. I asked questions, lots of them. I took notes, and watched tons of Youtube videos, and slowly started piecing together the vast IT puzzle. With each call, each interaction, I got better, more confident, and surprisingly, started to enjoy the challenge.

A few Lessons Learned:

  1. Never Underestimate Your Ability to Learn: Just as I learned the ropes of IT recruitment, remind yourself that you can master anything you set your mind to.
  2. Lean Into Discomfort: Growth often happens outside our comfort zones.
  3. Keep Your Sense of Humor: Laughter is not only the best medicine but also a great teacher.
  4. Ask, Learn, and Adapt: The more questions you ask, the more you learn. Never be afraid to show that you’re still learning.

As we march into the festive season, let's embrace our challenges with the same tenacity and courage we’ve shown throughout our lives. Each obstacle is not just a hurdle; it's a stepping stone towards greater growth and achievement. Remember, the path to victory may be rugged, but it’s our relentless spirit and unwavering determination that turn the toughest battles into our most remarkable victories.

Let's keep pushing forward, transforming every challenge into a testament of your strength and every uncertain step into a stride towards success. Here's to conquering the hard roads and celebrating every win along the way.

Always by your side,

Marcus Haney
