Japanese Knotweed is one of the UK’s most destructive weeds, being able to grow up to 10 cm every day. Getting rid of it can be a challenge therefore people have resorted to DIY treatment methods. However this only makes the problem worse.
Ineffective Treatment Methods:
Single Herbicide Treatment:
Japanese Knotweed is a very persistent weed. A single herbicide treatment cannot solve the problem. As a result of this, it needs to be treated long term with the right herbicide. This type of treatment will, in average, take about 10 visits. Furthermore, the herbicides needed to treat this invasive weed are not everyday products, therefore are not available to the public. You must be a licensed professional to buy these.
Time of Year:
You must also keep in mind the time of year. The best time of year to treat Japanese Knotweed is during August and October. During this period, the weed turns its attention to moving sugars and nutrients to the roots and the rhizome. This helps the plant to survive throughout winter. However instead of focusing on its growth, the weed is focusing on its survival. Therefore, end of summer and autumn are a great time to start the treatment. Doing it at another time will not give the same results.
Digging:
Another technique sometimes used to dig the plant out. If you were planning on digging out all of the weed, it may prove to be difficult. Japanese Knotweed is spread by the rhizome, a piece as small as your fingernail can start a new infestation therefore some parts of the root may later grow back up. Additionally, after digging it up, you cannot get rid of it along with your other regular garden waste. Japanese Knotweed is classed as controlled waste; therefore, it is illegal to dispose of this outside of a registered landfill site or incineration facility that has the correct type of permit.
