Industry Use Cases - Kubernetes / Openshift

Hello everyone,

I am writing this blog to share my learnings from the yesterday's Expert session on Industry Use Cases for Kubernetes / Openshift from RedHat Experts. First of all I would like to thank Vimal Daga Sir, Preeti Ma'am and LinuxWorld Informatics Pvt. Ltd. team for organizing this session. This session was delivered by three industry experts:- Mr. Amel Mathai (Technical Delivery Manager, Redhat Training ), Mr. Daleep Bais (Senior Technical Instructor, RedHat Technologies) and Mr. Abid Mattoo (Partner Sales Manager, Redhat).

What is Kubernetes ?

Kubernetes is an open-source container-orchestration system for automating computer application deployment, scaling, and management.

Features of K8S: Scalability, Workload portability, Stability Vs speed argument

Challenges associated with K8s: such as Deployment, Hardening, Operations.


Containerization vs Virtualization

Containers are like a box in which we can create an environment to launch an application and it is lighter than a Virtual machine.

Problem with Containers:

  • Scheduling
  • Life cycle and Health
  • Discovery
  • Monitoring

A virtual machine (VM) is a virtual environment that functions as a virtual computer system with its own CPU, memory, network interface, and storage, created on a physical hardware system.

Containerization is the new Virtualization

The difference between Virtual machines and containers is that container virtualization occurs on the OS whereas Virtual machine virtualization occurs in server hardware. The typical boot time in the container is in seconds whereas the boot time in a Virtual machine is in minutes.

Docker as a Service Platform

What is OpenShift?

OpenShift is an open source container application platform based on the Kubernetes container orchestrator for enterprise application development and deployment.

S2I and Service Mesh

S2I(Source-to-Image) enables developer to create application directly from source code, behind the scenes, it builds the image, pushes it to the registry and deploys the application.

Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh provides a platform for behavioral insight and operational control over your networked microservices in a service mesh. With Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh, you can connect, secure, and monitor microservices in your OpenShift Container Platform environment.

Podman
