Churchill Fellowship Applications Open Soon

A Churchill Fellowship is a unique opportunity to travel overseas and explore a topic or issue.?Applications are open to all sectors of the community in any field or topic of interest and open on Wednesday 1 March 2023.?The Churchill Trust is undertaking virtual information sessions throughout February 2023 to inspire applications for the 2023 Churchill Fellowship round.?There is a specific session on Environmental Management and Sustainability projects on 6 February.

Quad Bike Use Survey

Quad bike users are over-represented in serious injury statistics. Sadly, more than fifty Queenslanders have been killed using quad bikes since 2011. Share your thoughts about quad bike safety in a confidential 15 minute survey.?The survey will help Workplace Health and Safety Queensland to understand the behaviours and beliefs of people who own or use quad bikes for work, recreation or any other purpose.?The information you provide will be treated as confidential and will only be released in a manner that prevents individual identification. This survey is undertaken in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles (2014).?The survey closes Monday 27 February 2023.?

Australia’s ReMade Brand

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water are working on a ReMade in Australia brand, which aims to promote Australian made recycled content products.?A discussion paper seeking feedback on the brand’s design is now live on the department’s Have Your Say webpage. The paper outlines potential rules products would meet to be eligible for the brand, as well as key feedback the department has heard in consultations and our November 2022 workshop series on the brand. The discussion paper will be open for comment until COB 10 February 2023 and you can provide feedback by answering a short survey on the proposed rules or by responding to the paper with a written submission. Reforming the Safeguard Mechanism

The Australian Government is consulting on a proposed approach to reforming the Safeguard Mechanism. The reforms will help industry reduce emissions in line with Australia’s climate targets.

The position paper outlines the proposed approach on:

  • The Safeguard Mechanism’s share of the national emissions reduction target
  • Setting baselines for existing and new facilities, including the rate of decline
  • Arrangements for issuing and using Safeguard Mechanism Credits
  • Access to flexible compliance arrangements. These include access to credits, offsets, banking and borrowing arrangements, multi-year monitoring periods and a cost containment measure
  • Tailored treatment of emissions-intensive, trade-exposed facilities.

Feedback is also sought on the draft subordinate legislation including:

  • National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Safeguard Mechanism) Amendment (Reforms) Rule 2023
  • Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Amendment (No. 2) Rules 2023
  • Australian National Registry of Emissions Units Rules 2023

Consultation on the changes closes 24 February 2023.


Expanding Queensland’s Container Refund Scheme

Consultation is underway on expanding the containers that are eligible for a refund under Queensland’s container refund scheme. The Heads of EPAs of Australia and New Zealand (HEPA) have released the draft per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances National Environmental Management Plan (PFAS NEMP) version 3.0 for public consultation. Jobs and Skills Australia

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations has released a Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) discussion paper for interested parties to provide their views to the Australian Government about the ongoing arrangements of JSA, ahead of permanent arrangements being finalised.?The discussion paper is focused on the areas of functions and ways of working for Jobs and Skills Australia’s ongoing operations.?Submissions close 4pm, 10 February 2023.

Guarantee of Origin Scheme

Australia's proposed Guarantee of Origin Scheme will track and verify emissions from hydrogen and other products made in the country, as well as provide renewable electricity certification. The scheme is voluntary and aims to establish new markets for hydrogen and streamline the process for reporting emissions information. It will also support a variety of renewable energy claims, including for hydrogen GO certification or corporate renewable energy or emissions reduction claims. The scheme is open for public consultation until February 3, 2023.

Critical Metals

On 21 October 2022, the Australian Government announced that it will develop a new Australian Critical Minerals Strategy to ensure it supports the Government’s priorities for the development of the critical minerals sector.?The Discussion Paper can be found on the Department of Industry, Science and Resources Consultation Hub. The paper discusses the role of critical minerals in supporting clean energy technologies and considers how Australia might capture global clean energy opportunities by expanding the critical minerals sector into downstream processing. The Department is seeking feedback from industry and community stakeholders to inform the direction of the Strategy which will be delivered in 2023.?The Strategy will outline the Government’s priorities for developing the critical minerals sector, including how Australia can create new economic opportunities, develop new sovereign capabilities and industries, build reliable competitive and diverse supply chains and support clean energy technologies.?A Media Release from Minister King on the release of the discussion paper can be found here.?Stakeholders are encouraged to provide written submissions in response to questions in the discussion paper alongside general feedback related to the Strategy or the critical minerals sector.
