In the Industry: Make Healthcare Productive (Again)

By 2020, healthcare spending in the United States is expected to be so large that our health system will become the fourth largest economy in the world—bigger than the entire country of Germany. As our healthcare system grows, it does so on a bed of preexisting challenges, some of which the Affordable Care Act intended to solve. However, whether you love or hate the ACA, its very existence is threatened and the gridlock this could create leaves us all in a state of uncertainty surrounding the very role government will play in cracking the code on access, quality, and sustainable growth.

While administration worries itself with large-scale issues of budget and legislation, those on the front lines of healthcare, and those of us supporting the front lines, will need to forge ahead with innovations to drive advancement. No matter how small those innovations may be – don’t get distracted by the federal fight.

As we push for healthcare to become more productive and cost-effective, industry innovators and entrepreneurs must lead the charge. In the fight for a more efficient, affordable, and navigable healthcare system, it will be the work of a million small heroic achievements—not the intervention of a large government mouthpiece—that will finally make healthcare high-performing. Grant us separation of health tech and state, and we’ll unbreak healthcare in return.

What places in the healthcare landscape do you think need innovation the most?

We all talk about healthcare costs on the rise. Why not innovate on preventive healthcare? Empower the patient to be proactive by providing simpler to comprehend health programs coupled with physician access. Less reactive vs more proactive through disruption can take us back to the essence of patient health digitally vs patient volume processing "conveyor belts".

Companies like Athena have innovated in back office systems by combining tech and services. More patient-facing innovation needs to integrate tech+service model to gain traction, drive positive ROI for clinicians and engage patients. We find significantly accelerated adoption curve with the tech+service approach over tech only.

Meeting facilitation and to get away from those sticky notes. There are digital solutions that can aid in collaboration via the cloud.

To answer the question you asked, I think we need more innovation in End of Life Care using both technology and the high touch, loving approach of places such as Zen Hospice. We spend so much money, technology and effort making people miserable at the end of life and often shortening life rather than focusing on quality and caring for people and their families at such a vulnerable time.

Creating activated patient is the most challenging task. At the same time it will be the most effective solution in achieving affordable care. We need innovative ways to make patients realize that they play most important role in their health.
