Welcome to Industry Insights! This month, we share developments in Engineering, Energy, and Tech, featuring the construction of the world's first carbon-neutral spaceport, Dyson's £100m research hub, a £31m nuclear clean-up project, Jaguar Land Rover's electric transformation, and upcoming tech events.
What’s happening in Engineering, Energy, and Tech:
Construction has begun on the UK's first mainland vertical launch spaceport in Sutherland, Scotland, after Orbex secured £14.6m funding. The spaceport, overseen by the engineering and consulting firm Jacobs, aims to launch up to 12 orbital rockets annually for satellite deployment. ?It will be the world's first carbon-neutral spaceport, with Jacobs providing design, procurement, and operational support.

The engineering giant is investing £100m in a new Bristol-based research and development hub focusing on software and AI. Bristol was chosen for its status as an international hub for digital skills. The centre, which still awaits planning permission, will employ hundreds of engineers to work on appliances for future release. This move comes as part of Dyson's larger plan to invest £2.75bn in global manufacturing and research, with development sites across the UK, Singapore, China, Malaysia, Philippines, and Poland.

Magnox is set to begin a significant decommissioning project at the Berkeley nuclear site to clean up and demolish four 'blower house' superstructures. Altrad has won a £31m contract for the project, with support from several other firms. The project, originally planned for the 2070s, is expected to take eight years and marks a major step forward in sustainably decommissioning the Berkeley site.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced a £15bn plan to transform its Merseyside plant into an all-electric manufacturing site and invest more in its West Midlands sites. As part of its Reimagine strategy, JLR aims to become the world's leading modern luxury car manufacturer. The first all-electric Range Rover will be built at Halewood, JLR's first all-electric site, with pre-orders opening later this year. JLR plans to become an electric-first, modern luxury carmaker by 2030.
