What’s happening in Engineering, Energy, and Tech:
GE Vernova and Squadron Energy are kicking off a huge wind energy project in New South Wales, Australia. They've sealed a deal for 1.4GW of wind turbines, committing a whopping $2.75bn in a green strategic alliance. The 414MW Uungula wind farm is first in line, with Spicers Creek and Jeremiah wind farms next on the list. Construction begins in early 2024.

Japan has just boosted its renewable energy game with the start of the Ishikari Bay New Port offshore wind farm. It’s now the country’s largest, boasting a 112-MW capacity, and features groundbreaking 8-MW Siemens Gamesa turbines. The wind farm has already secured a 20-year power purchase agreement, targeting 10 GW by 2030 and 45 GW by 2040.
Spain is launching its first hybrid plant, mixing hydroelectric and solar power. The HIDRO Cedillo project in Cedillo (Extremadura) will boast over 160,000 solar modules and a fixed structure for hydroelectric power generation. The hybrid solution aims to reduce reliance on unpredictable weather for energy while reducing the need for separate infrastructure developments to connect to the grid.
Canada’s BC Hydro hit a new record for peak electricity demand of 11,300 MW on the chilly night of January 12. Before this, the record was at 10,977 MW back in December 2022. Despite a historic drought, they managed to supply more than enough energy to meet demand and were even able to export 200MW to support an electrical grid alert in Alberta.
