Industrialization in West Bengal

I can guarantee no industrialist will come to West Bengal. Now everybody will demand to get back the land. And no new investment will come to West Bengal. Its ok that the people of West Bengal does not want industry. They want land and farming as profession. And disposable income is very low. Where from the purchasing power will come? Who will buy agricultural products?

There is interrelationship between agriculture and industry. I think the Economists of west bengal do not know ...this basic issue. They are politicalised and lack personality. They oil government and have forgotten everything they have studied in University.

Unemployment will be at the pick. And educated people will be anti-social for lack of job. The professionals either will go to other states or overseas. And other ba, bcom, bsc, msc, mcom will be private tutor or farmer. The farming in West Bengal creates less surplus after satisfying farmer's own need. So, in West Bengal standard of living is very low compared to farmers of Punjab, Haryana and other agricultural states.

But in these states also industry is in full swing and boys, girls of farmer's move from farming to corporate world.

With only agriculture, no country can develop. Economists here are politically biased and involved in vested interest. They are guided by politicians and are shoulder less.

It is poorest and will be poorest in coming 10 years. Farming will be the only profession. And brain drain will be a natural phenomenon. Already the good students are leaving the state. It is and will be a state of maid servants, servants, richshaw poolers, chop muri seller, tea seller without any education and intellect. It will be a very low cultured and low educated state.

Sure, there is no dearth of intellect and hard work potential anywhere in India. But i industrialisation needs peaceful environment for creating assets. West Bengal will have to measure up well on these desiderata.

Another big reason why industry will not come here, because of extortion and syndicate-raj being promoted by the leaders of the ruling party. Even the existing ones are closing or shifting their factories in other states. The only objective of the ruling party is to remain in power and nothing else.

Personally I do not agree with your views Sucharit. There is no dearth of intellects and hard working people in the state. People from the state are doing very well across the globe. Local political parties have always expressed the importance of investment in state from industrialists in other parts of the country and world. The state has been notoriously unpopular on various counts. Cheap labour being an advantage has been overshadowed by labour unions. I feel that the state administration should take balanced socio-economic approach. Important lessons could be taken from neighboring sates.

Dismal view. But correct, though harsh. A lot of states benefited industrially from the days Naxalite movement started. Followed by strikes and anti- industrial policies of three decades. Still, Jute, Coco, Textile and agri-based industries can catch fancy of general masses. Bengal artisans work in Gold ornament factories in as far as Rajasthan. Silk is equally native of western borders with Bihar. May be a different approach will change climate. For that matter, Kerala also does not boost of many industries.
