Safety. A small word with a big meaning. What can be more important than life? That is what safety is all about.

Coming from an island where industrial safety is a joke, my introduction to these concepts has been especially interesting. In December 2018, a propane truck caused a big explosion, destroying a plastic company in Santo Domingo, D.R. Several people were found dead, and many were injured. The forensics investigation reveals that the truck that was delivering the fuel had a security valve without a knob, so when the driver was trying to close it with a plier to cut the delivery of the fuel; it exploded. Sadly, these types of things are the norm in D.R., not the rule.

Safety measures cannot be taken for granted. In 1970, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to “ensure safe and healthy working conditions for workers by setting, enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.”

If you are planning to do something in a working environment that involves third parties or if you are responsible for private personnel in public or private places, you need to inform and be informed about the necessary safety measures before you begin any type of work. If you are the responsible party, you also must enforce those safety measures. In the event of any failure, you will be protected if the guidelines are followed.

From having a single sign to prevent a slip at the entrance of your business while cleaning, to knowing the proper mask your employees must use to air paint in your workshop; they each have a guidance you can refer to.

Not many business owners know, for example, that the mask the painter uses in their shop must be individually fixed to fit his face. The mask selection process guarantees that the mask will filter the air from contaminants that could harm him and assures the mask will be sealed to the borders that are in contact with the face. The result will give the employee the confidence that he will not inhale gases that could harm him over the years.
