Industrial IoT Landscape Map: All Technologies

A review of 2,849 IIoT technology and service providers found that 70% of the companies are headquartered in only five countries: the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Germany, and India. These countries are followed by a long tail of countries primarily in Europe and Asia.

Companies in the US, Europe, and Japan tend to be more highly oriented around technology development, while those in China and India are more likely to be systems integrators. This trend reflects the higher investment in applied rather than primary research in developing economies with high growth rates and low penetration rates for many technologies - speed to market with old technology trumps best in class / market first innovation.

This landscape will likely evolve in the coming years as China takes a more ambitious role in AI, robotics, and telecommunications and other emerging technology domains. Aside from China, few other countries are poised to compete with the traditional technology leaders. This trend may further extend the economic divide between advanced and developing economies. This divide is extreme in IT and service markets (media, finance, telco, etc.) while developing countries remained relatively competitive in physical good industries. This could change as robotics, 3D printing, robotic process automation, and other technologies reduce the advantage of low cost labor.

Thank you for this analysis Erik Walenza-Slabe. What would be your advice to policymakers trying to foster a larger number of (I)IoT companies in their respective countries?

Quite quiet in Africa. Smart Africa, will be interesting to have projects around IoT.
