Induction Hardening Vs Case Hardening
Induction hardening and case hardening are two different methods of surface hardening metal parts, especially steel. They have different advantages and disadvantages, depending on the application and the material.
Induction Hardening
Induction hardening is a thermal process that uses electromagnetic induction to heat the surface of a metal part and then quench it with water, oil, or air. This creates a hard and wear-resistant surface layer while keeping the core soft and ductile. Induction hardening is suitable for parts that have a high carbon content or are alloyed with other elements that increase the hardenability of the steel. Induction hardening can be done quickly and precisely, without affecting the shape or dimensions of the part. It can also achieve selective hardening of specific areas of the part, such as the teeth of a gear or the head of a ball stud. Induction hardening is widely used in the automotive industry, especially for suspension and steering components.
Case Hardening
Case hardening is a thermochemical process that involves infusing additional carbon or nitrogen into the surface layer of a low-carbon steel part. This increases the surface hardness while maintaining a ductile core. Case hardening can be done by various methods, such as carburizing, nitriding, carbonitriding, or cyaniding. Case hardening is suitable for parts that have a low carbon content and need a high surface hardness, such as screws, pins, or shafts. Case hardening can produce a deeper hardened layer than induction hardening, but it takes longer and requires higher temperatures. It can also cause distortion or warpage of the part due to thermal stresses.

1 年I don't share your optimism about induction hardeninh (IH) for gears mainly for small modules it's impossible to obtain the "quality" (to be short) of the case hardening. IH it's OK for open air slow speed low power transmissions like slew drives en so on....
