Indo-Nordic Industry Dialogue on Sustainability in Davos
The Modern India (Det Moderne India)
DMI is a business driven climate initiative where the sustainability goals and DEIB are the frameworks of our activities
Over 60 heads of state and nearly 300 ministers and other political leaders attended Davos 2024, several of which delivered public addresses. The 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum was held between 15-19 January in Davos, Switzerland. The meeting was held under the theme Rebuilding Trust and featured over 200 sessions with leading public figures.
The need for businesses to adapt to climate change, and for countries to unite for action against it despite their differences, was another hot topic. Ajay Banga, President, World Bank Group, said we had an “existential climate crisis” on our hands and “a sense of urgency is our only saviour.” Others spoke about the ultimate benefit businesses will reap for adopting sustainable practices, and about the need to allocate resources correctly in the fight against climate change.
An assessment of Davos 2024 by consulting firm McKinsey and Company says “India is transforming rapidly as one of the fastest growing large economies in the world. When it comes to technology, talent, healthcare, and other areas, its future in 2024—and beyond—is worth paying attention to.”
India also made its presence felt in other ways than its economic potential. One of the ideas discussed at WEF this year was how investment in women’s health could boost the global economy by $1 trillion annually by 2040. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), “One of the key takeaways from the Forum meeting was the announcement of the launch of a Global Good Alliance for Gender Equity and Equality with the support and endorsement by WEF and Government of India. The idea of this alliance emerged from the G20 Leaders’ Declaration and India’s abiding commitment to the cause of women-led development as propounded by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.”
Indian lounges dominated the main Promenade street of Davos, with re-purposed storefronts focused on female leadership and empowerment, as well as digital infrastructure. Also present were the Indian states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, which have been touting themselves as tech hubs for manufacturing and artificial intelligence.
Indo-Nordic Industry Dialogue on Sustainability in Davos
December and January were busy months for DMI, as we were preparing for World Economic Forum. Taking part in the annual WEF meeting in Davos allows DMI not only to listen, learn, and understand important global discussions, but also to weigh in and provide our views within our areas of expertise, not least with views on Indo Nordic Collaboration. At Davos, sustainability is no longer a trend but a business imperative. Leaders recognize that social and environmental responsibility is not only good for the planet, but also for long-term financial performance. As we move forward, we must look for business models that not only generate profits, but also have a positive impact on society and the environment.
The ongoing Indo-Nordic Cooperation, marked by Summits in 2018 (Sweden), 2022 (Denmark), and the upcoming 2024 event in Norway, underscores a shared commitment to collaborative and collective action. This commitment is vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Central to this strategy is the emphasis on renewable energy, innovation through startups, and new technologies. These elements are crucial for transforming ambitions into tangible outcomes. Reflecting on the inspiring discussions at the first Indo-Nordic Industry Dialogue on Sustainability in Davos. Companies from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and India came together to share their thoughts on the way forward towards on the pathway towards achieving the SDGs.
