India and Bangladesh, two vibrant nations in South Asia, are bound by a relationship that transcends mere geographical boundaries. Anchored in a common history, cultural affinities, and shared aspirations, this unique relationship has gained further significance in the current era of globalization, with resonance in politics, economics, culture, and education.
The Indo-Bangladesh relationship has a rich historical foundation, a significant highlight of which is the encounter between Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Mahatma Gandhi. The year was 1947, the location was Kolkata, and the occasion was Gandhi's peacekeeping mission amidst communal riots. Rahman, then an emerging student leader, stood alongside veteran leader H.S. Suhrawardy, as they supported Gandhi's protest against communal violence. This historic encounter left an indelible mark on Sheikh Rahman. Imbued with Gandhi's values of peace, unity, and equality, he envisioned a Bangladesh that echoed these principles, a vision that continues to shape contemporary Bangladesh, particularly in its pursuit of harmony and universal education.
This historic event is further amplified by the significant role India played during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. Marking a crucial chapter in the Indo-Bangladesh narrative, India's decisive involvement in supporting Bangladesh's fight for freedom reaffirmed the strength and depth of the bilateral ties. This milestone serves as a reminder of shared trials and triumphs, and it continues to resonate in the relationship between the two nations.
Tracing the legacy of these leaders, we see the shared vision of peace and progress mirrored in the present-day leadership of both nations. Under the stewardship of India's Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Bangladesh's Prime Minister Smt. Sheikh Hasina, the nations have strengthened diplomatic ties, bolstering the spirit of friendship, cooperation, and shared growth.
During the Modi-Hasina era, Indo-Bangladesh relations have witnessed unprecedented advancements. The nations have jointly embarked on cross-border connectivity projects, collaborated on urgent issues like climate change, bolstered trade relations, and stood as staunch advocates for global peace. This bilateral partnership epitomizes the shared commitment to mutual progress that once marked the aspirations of Gandhi and Rahman.
The promotion of 'Education for All', a goal aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4, is a pivotal initiative of this collaboration. Prime Minister Hasina's administration has made significant strides in this area through the digitalization of education, with India, a trailblazer in the digital learning sphere, extending support through knowledge and resource sharing.
This sense of mutual cooperation was evident during my recent visit to Bangladesh as part of a delegation from the Harijan Sevak Sangh (an organization established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1932) and Shobhit University (a prominent university located in the historical city Meerut in National Capital Region of India). My journey began from the Gandhi Ashram Trust in Noakhali, a place steeped in history and a testament to Gandhi's tireless efforts during the tumultuous period of communal violence. This visit, followed by engaging conversations with policymakers, educators, and citizens, brought to light our shared commitment to peace, harmony, and education, underscoring the essence of our diplomatic ties - a blend of shared vision and collective effort.
The Indo-Bangladesh ties of today are a reflection of the principles upheld by Gandhi and Rahman and the renewed commitment of Modi and Hasina. As we navigate the course of the 21st century, it is essential to cherish and uphold this spirit of unity and shared growth. This path will inevitably lead us towards a future echoing the legacy of our historical figures and resonating with our contemporary commitments.
The Indo-Bangladesh relationship, in the expansive landscape of international diplomacy, is a beacon guiding us towards peace, harmony, and the pursuit of 'Education for All.' As we step forward, let us remain steadfast in our shared vision, working tirelessly to fulfill the aspirations of our esteemed leaders, past and present. This bond, born of our shared history and mirrored in our contemporary endeavors, is our guiding light towards a future of global peace, prosperity, and enlightenment.
Let us take inspiration from the words of Rabindranath Tagore, the revered poet of both India and Bangladesh, whose profound wisdom continues to guide us:
"Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high,
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake."
With these profound words in mind, we tread towards shaping a future that embodies the ideals of peace, unity, and mutual growth, and fosters enlightenment through universal education. It is in this spirit that we, India and Bangladesh, continue to enrich our unique bond, a bond born out of our shared history and reflected in our present endeavors.
Together, we strive to realize the aspirations of our revered leaders and awaken into the 'heaven of freedom' envisioned by Tagore. It is this very bond that guides us towards a harmonious future, a testament to global peace, prosperity, and enlightenment. Let us journey forward, honoring our past, celebrating our present, and anticipating a shared future of endless possibilities.
