Earlier, the weaker students tend to go to tuition classes because s/he needed special attention to improve a particular subject to get good marks. But nowadays tuition has become a part of modern education as it acts like a medicinal supplement to formal education. On the other hand, the tuition teaching has become a lucrative job if you invest your time and energy effectively to build a loyal student community. Even the parents have become desperate as there is no choice for themselves due to the competitive nature of modern education system. That is why they try out group or individual tuition to ensure that their children are getting the best support for the spent money.
Group tuition has a classroom environment with one tutor for each subject which is held normally after school hours or on weekends. The head count may differ from place to place in group tuition. The term ‘mass classes’ have been coined for extra-large group classes where you have more than 100 students in the class. Individual tuition is mainly based with a personal touch which operates in one-to-one course delivery mode with a flexible time according to the student’s lifestyle. As a parent, I think that first you should identify whether there is an actual need for tutoring and then you can decide what tuition style suites best for your child.
Actually, each method has its pros and cons. Individual tuition is kind of customized tutoring with undivided attention on the student. It is time saving, flexible and good for students who do not like peer pressure especially for introverts. It is ideal for students who need special attention especially who are with learning disabilities and slow learners. The tutor works according to the child’s learning speed and the parents can also get involved in the learning process to monitor the progress. Higher cost is associated with individual tuition as the biggest disadvantage. The child tends to rely more on the tutor as they provide all the resources. So, instead of thinking about solutions, there can be a tendency from the student to ask worked solutions from the tutor while showing lack of independence in learning.
According to my view, group tuition is ideally suitable for quickly grasping and academically proficient learners. It promotes healthy competition, group discussions, focused learning as there is motivation from peers and improvement in social skills of the student in the long run. Group tuition is comparatively cost effective as well. Group tuition is not suitable for slow learners which may get neglected and they can feel as being left out from other students. Even there can be formed small groups/gangs amongst the students with different motives which can cause good or bad distractions/influence when learning.
