The Indispensable Role of "Border Piece People" in Our Lives

We may not agree on everything but we can agree on how to best solve a jigsaw puzzle: locating and fitting together the border pieces.

This is more than a mere tactic, it’s a strategy that provides a tangible shape and a clear path forward. It's about crafting a boundary within which the chaotic jumble of remaining pieces can make sense, offering an immediate sense of progress and the motivation to press on.

In our personal and professional lives, we encounter a similar phenomenon.

Here, the border pieces are not cardboard cutouts, but real people—key individuals who bring structure to our dreams and ambitions. I like to think of these folks as "border piece people."

• They are mentors, colleagues, and friends who both support and constructively challenge our aspirations, giving us the perspective needed to see the larger picture.
• They are the ones who make daunting tasks seem feasible, who add a touch of enjoyment to the pursuit of our goals.

These individuals are invaluable because they provide more than just superficial support; they offer critical reviews and constructive feedback needed to refine our ideas and approaches. They are partners in our journey of learning and execution and key components of our growth.

In my own journey, there have been several noteworthy "border piece people", which include Rachel Mallernee, Marisa DeSalles, Reyda Taylor, Marcus D. Cunningham, Jess Romer, Catherine Ashton, Meenakshi (Meena) Das, Adrienne Longenecker, Francoise Van Keuren, Evan Wildstein, Ashley Thompson, to name just a few. Each one of them has played a pivotal role in how I see myself.

As you reflect upon your own path, can you identify the "border piece people" in your life? They might be more evident than you think. Recognize them, cherish them, and if you're particularly fortunate, you'll find what I call the "magical corner pieces"—those rare individuals who not only frame the edges but also anchor everything firmly in place.

I urge you, look around, find your "border piece people," and when you do, embrace the structure and support they provide. With them, you're well on your way to completing the beautiful puzzle of your life's ambitions.
