Since 1994, the Indigenous Peoples of Wild Coast in South Africa have been threatened by the extractive projects endangering their livelihoods, their rights, cultural practices and their territory. However, the most recent project, sponsored by the oil company Shell, does not only jeopardize the communities in the area, but also puts at risk one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.?

In 2021, after making global commitments at the UN Climate Change Summit, the Shell oil company announced the start of their oil and gas exploratory operations on the pristine waters of Wild Coast.?

The company's operations involve the use of 48 air cannons that cause explosions at sea every 10 seconds, 24 hours a day, for approximately 5 months. According to scientific studies, this procedure will ravage a great part of the biodiversity, compromising the livelihood of the coastal communities that already face various effects from climate change.

Last December, the communities won a court order to halt the company's operations (still under review) since the risks to local livelihoods will be aggravated if Shell is granted the right to extract oil and gas from the Wild Coast, increasing the risk of oil spills.

It's time to act! The main review request has yet to be heard.

We call on Shell to stop operations and ask the government to respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and stop the contamination of the territory.?
