In preparation for the PBC Convocation at Rishihood University , where I would have the honor of meeting R Balasubramaniam (Dr. Balu), I chose to read his book, Power Within. This decision felt natural, as I tend to read the works of people I’m about to meet. When I learned that we would receive signed copies as gifts, my excitement grew, and I decided to wait until I held the signed edition. The book became an enriching journey, offering profound insights into leadership through the lens of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s life and principles—a figure whose work I have closely followed for over two decades.
In one of the addresses, Dr. Balu talks openly about the challenges every author faces in jotting down their thoughts according to publishers and readers in mind, yet the depth and purpose in his writing were clear, resonating with my curiosity about Indic perspectives on leadership. Having encountered several Western models of leadership, I was eager to learn how Indian philosophy informs Dr. Balu’s ideas—something I found beautifully interwoven with teachings from Bharatiya Darshan.
One of my favorite aspects of Modi’s leadership, discussed at length in the book, is rooted in the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the belief that the world is one family. This principle, guiding much of Modi’s vision, has shaped not only his domestic initiatives but his global leadership as well. His commitment to the greater good embodies this philosophy, positioning him as a leader for both Bharat and the world.
No task is impossible for competent person, no place is distant for business person, no land is foreign for educated person, no one is a stranger for persons with good communication abilities. -Panchatantra2.57
Modi’s ability to communicate effectively is a hallmark of his leadership. He has a keen sense of how to read his audience, tailor his message, and ensure it resonates. This skill has won him admiration and trust across colleagues and civil servants alike, fostering support that drives his initiatives forward. Dr. Balu highlights this trait with remarkable clarity, portraying it as a skill that has universal value. Another quality I admire deeply is Modi’s composure, his ability to remain centered and stay in a state of flow, even in times of great challenge—a trait I strive to embody myself and I suppose everyone of us shall thrive for that.
The book shares an example of this humility and resilience during the farm law protests. Although the laws aimed to benefit farmers, a communication gap to address policy led to nationwide protests. Modi responded by listening to the people, ultimately withdrawing the laws—a rare show of humility and adaptability that strengthened his leadership.
Modi’s strategic vision is also evident in his policies. When his government took office in 2014, they launched transformative initiatives like linking bank accounts with Aadhaar and establishing direct beneficiary transfers, laying the groundwork for economic reform. This approach, part of a continuous process rather than a quick solution, underscores Modi’s focus on long-term growth and sustainability.
A key focus of his leadership is capacity building, especially within the civil services. Modi views civil servants as Karma Yogis—those devoted to serving the prosperity of citizens. This idea led to the launch of the Karma Yogi mission, designed to empower and elevate India's administrative framework. The shift from being mere Karmacharis (employees) to Karma Yogis exemplifies his commitment to a values-based approach to governance.
Modi’s visionary thinking extends to the concept of Amrit Kaal, a vision for India’s future as we approach 2047, the centenary of India’s independence. While a government term lasts five years, Modi’s focus on sustainable growth reflects a vision for generations. This forward-thinking perspective resonates with inspiring figures like Ricky Kej , who found his purpose in music that champions sustainable development and ecological preservation.

Initiatives like the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and the “One District, One Product” program underscore Modi’s commitment to economic reform and his celebration of India’s rich diversity. Programs like Gati Shakti and Nari Shakti illustrate his focus on infrastructure and women’s empowerment, presenting a well-rounded and inclusive vision. Dr. Balu skillfully captures the ethos behind these initiatives, emphasizing their deep alignment with India’s growth story.
Colleagues such as Hardeep Singh Puri have praised Modi’s dedication and work ethic, noting his ability to win the trust of the nation and his commitment to act without seeking personal credit. Ministers and officers privileged to work with him echo this sentiment, recognizing his devotion to India’s progress. There are many interaction I recall stating same appreciation for Modi's work ethic, however, Nitin Gadkari , Piyush Goyal and Sadhguru JV remark are notable as they are also really hard-working Individuals.
Reflecting on Power Within and the experience of meeting Dr. Balu, I feel grateful and inspired. This book has deepened my understanding of leadership and encouraged me to approach leadership not only as an opportunity but as a responsibility. However, I wrote the following on the front page before reading this book
I have no idea, what this book holds but truly, it'll shape some perspective which is needed in this phase of my public life.
I really encourage all of you to read this book and understand the Indic power within the Leadership of Narendra Modi.
