Overview
In FY 2023-24, the West Zone of India witnessed extensive developments in its water supply & distribution sector. Among the notable state-level initiatives, Gujarat launched the Saurashtra-Narmada Avtaran Irrigation (SAUNI) Yojana. This mega project addresses water scarcity in drought-prone areas by channeling excess water from the Narmada River to arid regions. Maharashtra introduced new projects to improve water distribution in the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions. The state emphasized tackling acute water shortages in remote areas. Meanwhile, Goa made significant strides in wastewater treatment and improving water use in its coastal regions. Consequently, the state aimed to balance tourism demands with sustainable water management practices.?
Similarly, the South Zone made notable advancements, supported by substantial funding from the JJM and AMRUT 2.0 schemes. Karnataka's ambitious Upper Bhadra Project aimed to alleviate water shortages in drought-prone districts by establishing a network of reservoirs and pipelines. Similarly, Kerala introduced advanced water management systems to tackle water logging and distribution issues, particularly in flood-prone areas. This effort was complemented by improvements in urban water infrastructure funded through AMRUT 2.0. Tamil Nadu also made strides in water conservation by promoting rainwater harvesting and rehabilitating reservoirs, which enhanced overall water management across the state. Additionally, smaller territories like Lakshadweep and Pondicherry benefited from targeted investments to enhance desalination processes and upgrade water supply infrastructure, thereby supporting local communities and boosting tourism.
Meanwhile, the Central Zone received approximately INR 4,500 crore under JJM and INR 2,200 crore under AMRUT 2.0. In Madhya Pradesh, significant projects were launched to tackle water scarcity in the Bundelkhand and Malwa regions. The state focused on constructing new reservoirs, upgrading treatment plants, and expanding water distribution networks. Additionally, efforts were made to restore traditional water bodies and enhance rainwater harvesting to boost water sustainability. Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh, with its large tribal population and scattered rural communities, directed its efforts toward improving water access in remote and underserved areas. The state invested in building water storage facilities and expanding rural water pipelines. Both states emphasized sustainability through water conservation techniques and infrastructure rehabilitation.
These comprehensive efforts across all three zones reflect a strong commitment to improving water access, infrastructure, and management throughout the diverse regions of India.
