India's first Artificial Intelligence University begins classes + more education news
Hello Everyone,
In this week’s edition we have India’s first AI University that has already begun classes. Then, the Kerala CM has announced that they will be launching textbooks to fill the void left behind by NCERT textbooks. The USA has designed some specialised courses for Indian students in line with the NEP. Meanwhile, Karnataka’s CM has announced that the state will not be following NEP in higher education from the next academic year. Maharashtra has partnered with an NGO to offer career guidance classes to students. CBSE has offered to extend deadlines in student per section ratio by 3 years.
India’s First AI University Begins Classes
Universal AI University, India’s first university to offer courses in Artificial Intelligence (AI), commenced its first academic year in August 2023 in its Karjat campus. The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in AI and Future Technologies, along with Liberal Arts and Humanities, Global Affairs and Diplomacy, Law, Environment and Sustainability and Sports Sciences. Kerala restores topics deleted by NCERT textbooks
Kerala announced its intention to release supplementary textbooks for class 11 and 12, incorporating the content omitted by NCERT. These textbooks will be unveiled on 23rd August by CM Pinarayi Vijayan. The CM mentioned that while textbooks should be updated regularly, the State does not agree with the omission of certain aspects of the country’s history. Read more here.
Karnataka to Discontinue NEP in Higher Ed
Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah announced the discontinuation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in higher studies, starting from the next academic year. NEP will continue for the current academic year to avoid inconvenience to students. The decision aims to uphold the state's autonomy over its education system and policies. Read more here.

USA Designs Specialised Courses for Indians under NEP
The USA has started an educational programme in line with India’s NEP, allowing Indian students to pursue a one-year professional master’s degree with industrial specialisation in American universities. Courses are currently limited to STEM disciplines and are set to begin from fall 2024. Read more here.
Maharashtra partners with NGOs to offer career guidance in schools
The Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training (MSCERT) has launched a career readiness programme for students from classes 9 to 12 in government schools. This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with the NGO Antarang Foundation. A few months ago, Goa had also taken a similar initiative. Read more here.
CBSE sets 3 year deadline to limit students per section
After many private schools opposed the CBSE circular, CBSE has given schools until 2025-26 to rationalise student numbers for each class. The board advised schools to regulate admissions in junior classes, and apply for additional sections. The deadline for such applications has been extended till 31st August, 2023. Read more here.
