India’s Drone Expansion: Strengthening Defence & Surveillance

In a strategic push to bolster its defense capabilities, the Indian Army is set to expand its fleet of heavy-duty drones. With a focus on long-range intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), this move aims to enhance national security and maintain a technological edge over regional adversaries.

A New Era of Unmanned Warfare

The army's upcoming roadmap will prioritize unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs) capable of operating beyond 1,000 kilometers. These drones will be equipped to fly at altitudes of up to 30,000 feet, ensuring stealth and avoiding enemy detection.?

Additionally, the minimum endurance requirement of 24 hours will allow for extended missions, making them a vital asset in modern warfare.

Drones reduce operational risks for soldiers, provide real-time intelligence, and offer precision-strike capabilities. They also play a crucial role in counter-terrorism efforts by tracking cross-border infiltrations and targeting enemy hideouts with greater accuracy.

The Growing Need for Advanced Drones

Currently, the Indian Army operates around 50 Israeli-origin Heron Mark-I and Mark-II drones, along with Searcher-II medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) drones. However, this number is significantly lower compared to China’s vast fleet of UAVs, including advanced models like the Wing Loong-II and Hongdu GJ-11 Sharp Sword.?

Pakistan, too, has bolstered its drone arsenal, with an estimated 200 MALE drones, many supplied by China.

Given India’s challenging borders with both China and Pakistan, continuous real-time intelligence gathering is essential. Advanced drones will provide the army with better surveillance, operational flexibility, and a strategic advantage in conflict situations.

Major Investments in Drone Technology

Despite having fewer drones than its regional rivals, India has been making significant strides in strengthening its UAV capabilities. In September 2024, the country showcased domestically built drones capable of operating at altitudes above 15,000 feet. Additionally, India has approved the acquisition of 31 MQ-9B drones from the US, further enhancing its surveillance capabilities.

India’s growing interest in global drone programs is evident, as seen in its recent participation as an observer in the Eurodrone project. This initiative focuses on developing advanced MALE UAVs for ISR missions, providing India with valuable insights and potential collaboration opportunities.
