India's AI Outlook: Balancing Optimism and Concerns in the Workforce

Around 51% of Indians don't fear AI. Instead, they believe that it can assist them in performing their work more effectively and efficiently. However, their confidence in AI depends on whether their current employer provides adequate training.

According to a recent survey in 2023, it has been found that India has the potential to lead the integration of AI technology into businesses, but only if the industry adopts a suitable upskilling approach.

The survey report suggests that Indian respondents believe that AI will improve their work and productivity, which is significantly higher than the global average of 31%. However, this optimism is subject to organizations providing adequate upskilling opportunities.

There has been emphasised the increasing demands of the workforce amid the uncertainties and significant impact of AI. The workforce is demanding more from their employers due to the rising uncertainty and impact of AI. To thrive in this ever-evolving landscape, organizations and leaders will need to make tough choices while blending adaptability with innovative workforce structures and career pathways.?

The survey also revealed that 62% of Indian employees anticipate a significant change in the skills required for their jobs over the next five years. Additionally, 69% of them are already aware of these impending changes.

Employees are more confident than their global counterparts in their employers’ ability to provide the tools and opportunities for skill development, according to a recent report. However, the report also highlights restlessness in the Indian workforce, with 42% of employees considering a job change in the next year, primarily driven by the expectation of better pay packages and promotions, which is higher than the global average of 26%. Furthermore, 70% of Indian participants, as opposed to 35% globally, are willing to ask for a promotion.

The survey shows that Indian respondents are aware of the need for upskilling and are optimistic about the potential positive impact of AI on productivity. However, a significant number of Indian participants also expressed concern about the potential negative impact of AI on job nature and job security. Therefore, there is a need for a balanced approach to the workforce’s perception and preparation for AI integration.
