Indians and Anonymous Texting

Indians and Anonymous Texting

India, over the last few decades, underwent a sea change in terms of technical advancements and progression. One such progression is the idea of anonymous texting for making friends and finding companionship on the internet. Not just this, but expressing thoughts to strangers who might actually understand, and raising a voice against social injustices. All with a veil of safety in the form of anonymity.

What Causes the Repulsion?

Regardless of the newfound interest and acceptance of such activities among the younger generation of the Indian population, the older generation still remains weary of such structures. Safety being the first and foremost concern, coping with the evolution of technology, cyber crimes have also seemingly hiked. A well-handled and conducted platform that promotes secure experience can be beneficial for individuals struggling to make friends, for virtual platforms have become the source of comfort for today’s generation. This is due to the fact that many find it easier and less anxiety inducing, when approaching someone or communicating with someone, online.

The anonymity further helps in a way that it somewhat eliminates the possibility of being judged or ridiculed. However regardless of such boons, the safety concern is infallible, as young adults or teens can easily be misled. Due to the lack of an understanding and awareness among most of the young generation about severity and possibilities of hindrances or problems, they can often come across or fall prey to various troubling situations. Such issues can range from fraud, money laundering and even get to extend of extortion and trafficking. Hence, it is important to create a well-secured platform with heavy checking to ensure safety of its users, besides making sure that the users-young or old are made aware of the possible threats.

The Dogma that Looms Large

In the grand scheme of things, modern India is all about embracing change, growth, assimilation and development. However, all that is true when it comes to economy or political prosperity or development, is in question. Independent or liberating foreign ideas aren’t always a welcomed among Indians. Modern ideas and lifestyle nuances are often considered frivolous, especially among the older generation.

One such apparently problematic occurrence was the emergence of the concept of anonymous texting among the Indian populace. It can be considered rather abrupt as the concept was exceedingly alien to them. The Western consumer was relatively more akin to the idea and found it normal and quite interesting. The Indian audience, in particular the older strata of consumers were repelled by such platforms.

This section assumes them to be dangerous as they believe everyone present on such forums are a menace to the society and no person from a respectable household would promote such an idea. They were in the notion that one must meet, judge and assess an individual before sharing anything serious, else it is mere waste of time. Deep conversations with a stranger were a complete red flag for them.

Women users are especially condemned from using such platforms because it becomes the basis for her character judgement. In orthodox and backward households, mostly in rural India, talking to strangers has never quite been the idea that even young men were encouraged for, let alone women. Even though safety can be a genuine concern, most of the resistance arises from a false and incomplete idea regarding anonymous texting.

Even though, in the recent history, a positive change has been noticed in terms of the acceptance rate among the repelled consumers, the stereotype and the dogma associated with anonymous texting remains, as people are not quite past the age-old ideas of honour and respect associated with having association with simply any random stranger- as they might belong to a different religion, caste, class or even nationality. Such pre-determined basis and segregation of people on the basis of that are the primary obstacle in the healthy consumption of platforms, offering the application of anonymous texting.
