Indiana Jones and the 'Lost' CV

We've all been there.
The time has finally come to leave your current role and search for pastures new.
After much thought and consideration, you've finally decided to take the plunge and start looking for a new job.
But first you have to find your CV.
The hunt begins.....
Where the HELL did I put it?!
Did I save it to my old laptop? Current laptop? PC? iCloud? Google Drive? Box?
What was the last role I applied for? Was it 12 months ago? 12 years ago? Where is the application? Did I apply via the company website? LinkedIn? Did LinkedIn even EXIST then? Oh crap I'll have to update that too...
After failing to locate the precious document ANYWHERE a sane human would put it, you then begin an unrelenting search of one (or several) email accounts.
2.5 hours, much swearing and two cups of tea later, and you've finally found it.
HURRAH!
Exhausted but elated at the success of your Indiana Jones-esque search for the lost antiquity, you open up the document....
And it looks...old. Seriously old.
Bad AND old. Not good.
It's after 10pm now though, and rectifying this mess is going to require a serious investment of time.
It can wait until tomorrow....
Tomorrow
Eugh . This looks just as bad, if not worse, than it did yesterday.
How am I going to get this looking decent enough to send to that recruiter later today?!?!
*Googles how to write CV - reads 17 articles that all vaguely provide the same and yet very different advice?! What the f......*
*Downloads 3 example templates before settling on the one you started with*
*Updates job roles in EXACTLY the same format as the really old, bad one*
OK, so this is done now?
SUCCESS.
Summary
If some or all of this process seems familiar, you are not alone! The reality is that finding and then updating a CV is hard work, and hugely time consuming.
The problem is that very few people really understand how to do it, and the results are often less than ideal - especially in roles/industries (such as technology) where the competition for roles is generally enormous...
In my next outing I'll be talking about THE single most important thing when writing a CV.
