Indian Spacetech Startup Raises $10 Million in Funding Round Led by Peak XV Partners
Digantara , an innovative Indian space tech startup specializing in space situational awareness, has successfully secured $10 million in a funding round led by Peak XV Partners (formerly known as Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia). This investment marks Peak XV Partners' entry into the space-tech sector and highlights the immense potential of Digantara 's pioneering work in the industry.
The Series A1 funding round, which consisted of all-equity financing, saw active participation from existing investor Kalaari Capital. Additionally, Digantara welcomed new investors, including Japan's VC firm Global Brain, Campus Fund, and the founders of IIFL Wealth, further validating the startup's promising trajectory. With this recent funding, Digantara's total raised capital stands at an impressive $12.5 million, following a successful seed round of $2.5 million from Kalaari Capital in 2021.
Space has become an increasingly captivating domain, attracting the attention of governments, public bodies such as NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), as well as private companies worldwide. However, the growing presence of multiple players in the space industry has raised concerns about potential risks posed by space debris and objects that can jeopardize spacecraft safety. These objects are often too small to be detected, creating a significant threat to the success of space missions. Digantara aims to address this challenge by leveraging its infrastructure, including a constellation of satellites and software solutions.
Founded in December 2018 by Indian engineers Anirudh Sharma, Rahul Rawat, and Tanveer Ahmed, Digantara is at the forefront of developing an end-to-end solution known as the 'Space - Mission Assurance Platform' or 'Space - MAP.' This platform is designed to tackle the complexities of space operations and enhance situational awareness. By leveraging data from various sources, including its own satellites, commercial satellite operators, government agencies, and private companies, Digantara provides critical analytics and orbital positions for informed decision-making.
Digantara's approach to data collection is akin to the crowd-sourcing model adopted by Google Maps. Through this methodology, the startup gathers data from diverse sources and employs advanced processing techniques to transform it into actionable insights. This immersive and unique software platform offers users an unparalleled experience, setting it apart from existing solutions.
The startup's innovative offering encompasses three distinct modules. The defense module incorporates functions such as volumetric screening and satellite behavior pattern analysis. The commercial module provides machine design services, catering to the needs of commercial customers. Lastly, the insurance module generates risk reports for each orbit, enabling insurance companies to better understand and manage the associated risks, a critical consideration as satellite deployment increases.
While space agencies in the United States, Europe, and Russia have long maintained space situational awareness programs to monitor objects in orbit, Digantara believes that their platform serves as an essential additional layer of support for satellite operators. By incorporating sensor and data fusion, Digantara can collect data from multiple sensors and sources, enhancing its ability to track space objects. This innovative approach distinguishes Digantara from competitors who primarily rely on ground-based radars and telescopes for tracking purposes.
