Indian Professionals Prioritize Upskilling for 2024

Surge in Upskilling Amidst Falling Job Confidence

In the face of economic uncertainty and technological disruptions, Indian professionals prioritise upskilling like never before. According to Great Learning's Upskilling Trends Report 2024-25, 85% of professionals plan to invest in upskilling during FY25. The surge in comes when job retention confidence has dropped significantly, with only 62% of professionals feeling secure in their current roles – a nine-point decline from the previous year.

Experienced Professionals Lead the Upskilling Charge

The drive to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving job market is particularly pronounced among seasoned professionals with over 17 years of experience, with a remarkable 92% emphasising the need to upskill. Though experiencing the lowest job confidence at just 29%, entry-level professionals increasingly recognise the importance of upskilling. Their intent to enhance their skills has risen by 8% to reach 83% in FY25. Hari Krishnan Nair, Co-Founder of Great Learning, underscores the importance of this trend, stating, "Upskilling is crucial for both professionals and businesses to stay competitive amidst tech disruptions and macroeconomic situations."

Data Science, AI, and ML: Top Choices for Upskilling

Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning have emerged as the most sought-after domains for upskilling. These areas are favoured by professionals and enterprises, which are expected to focus their hiring efforts on these fields in FY25. Metropolitan cities are leading the charge in upskilling initiatives, with 87% of professionals planning to invest in their development. However, the report also highlights significant challenges, such as busy work schedules (34%) and financial constraints (19%), which hinder professionals' ability to pursue further education.

Career Growth and Personal Interest Drive Upskilling

Despite these hurdles, career growth within their current organisation remains the primary motivator for upskilling, cited by 39% of respondents, followed by personal interest at 17%. The report suggests that while professionals are eager to enhance their skills to ensure career longevity, the decline in job security confidence is a pressing concern influenced by global economic conditions and recent layoffs.
