Indian Institutions in QS World University Rankings

What is QS World University Rankings?

QS World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings produced by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The first rankings were published in 2004 and have become progressively more comprehensive.

The methodology focuses on global and regional academic excellence, faculty-student ratio, employer reputation and alumni employment.

The primary data source for the QS World University Rankings? is Quacquarelli Symonds, a market research firm that surveys over 100,000 academicians, 8,500 employers, and 1.8 million admission officers. Besides gathering data on world universities, QS collects data on universities in specific regions and different country universities.

?Crucial Factors Considered in QC Rankings?

The ranking methodology includes 13 performance indicators grouped into six broad categories:?

1.?????Academic reputation

2.?????Employer reputation

3.?????Faculty/student ratio

4.?????Citations per faculty

5.?????International student ratio

6.?????International Staff Ratio

?This QS approach is well-known and well recognised, and the rankings are extensively used by public officials as well as lawmakers across the globe. Ministries in several nations have set particular goals for the growth of their institutions of higher learning, relying on QS ratings.

These evaluations are a neutral assessment of a nation's education sector. They are an effective tool for identifying strong points, knowing where they correlate with the rest of the globe, and identifying flaws which must be rectified.

?India’s performance in 2022 Rankings

Across the globe, a record of 2462 universities from over 100 countries participated in the rankings. Of the 41 featured Indian universities, 7 were new entrants to the list. 9 Institutions of Eminence made it to the top 1000, 5 in the top 500 and 3 in the top 200.

This massive jump, justifiably so - a matter of pride, owes quite a lot of credit to the NEP.

End Note: It is a proud moment for Indian Education as all the top 500 Indian institutions have improved their ranking after a hiatus of about 10 years. Indian Higher Education Institutes(HEIs) have achieved a high global standing in the QS World Ranking by drastically improving factors like faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international student admissions and the male/female student enrolment ratio.

All thanks to the ongoing efforts of the current government towards improving the standards of higher education.

That said, there are however a lot of areas that call for the immediate attention of the government. The major one being the expenditure on education as a percentage of GDP wherein only 3.5% of GDP was spent on education in 2019-’20 against the 6% recommended by every national policy since 1968.

The country’s education penetration is low and the government is taking steps toward improving it by setting a target of achieving a 50% GER(Gross Enrolment Ratio) by the year 2035. Lastly, issues of geographical location and mobility of international faculty and students also have to be addressed and provided with an alternative route to continue teaching and learning activities.
