Much of the production &manufacturing units are established in rural areas and towns, which ultimately generate employment for millions of artisans. The Indian handicrafts industry is fragmented with more than 7 million regional artisans and over 67,000 exporters/export houses promoting regional art and craftsmanship in the domestic and global markets.

India is home to?more than 3,000 craft forms with artisans, spread across the country, working with papier-maché in Jammu and Kashmir, phulkari and bagh textiles in Punjab, brassware in Haryana, basket-weaving in Uttaranchal, chikankari and zardozi work in Uttar Pradesh, blue pottery and block printing in Rajasthan, gond painting in Madhya Pradesh, terracotta products and warli art in Maharashtra, crochet and lace work in Goa, sandalwood carving and banjara embroidery in Karnataka, thanjavurkalamkari in Tamil Nadu, teliarumal and kondapalli toys in Andhra Pradesh, madhubani paintings and mulberry silk products in Bihar, eri silk products in Assam and bamboo products in Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. These handicrafts are exported across geographies, including the US, the UK, the UAE, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Canada and Australia.

With the continuous development in the sector & promotional initiatives of the government, the handicraft sector has grown multi folds over the years. According to the data release by Ministry of Textiles, the Indian handicraft industry has shown a steady growth rate of 20% every year.Going as per the statistics of the handicraft exports, it can be said that in the present time of globalization, the handicraft sector has immense opportunities in domestic and International markets.

While the pathetic condition of artisan’s needs quick and robust interventions for their livelihood, the government has already been making strong efforts, by adopting measures that will be helpful in improving the conditions of our artisans and create competitive?handicraft products for global market. .?
