India on the Way to “re-invent†Energy
I have just returned from the #CERAWeek Energy Forum in New Delhi. Energy strategists, executives from super majors and policy makers met to discuss the future on energy in India. It is clear that a country with a population of 1.3 billion people makes a big difference when it comes to sustainable energy. This difference grows from big to huge if you consider that the per capita energy consumption is only 10% of the US levels today. A growing economy and a rising middle class is already changing this figure, so bringing the energy experts and policy makers together to re-invent energy in India is a great idea. Dharmendra Pradhan, Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, emphasized that “India will harness all sources of energy, including solar, wind, nuclear, hydro, coal and natural gas to meet its increasing energy demandâ€.
Energy thought leader Daniel Yergin (author of “The Prizeâ€) hosted a panel where I had the pleasure to discuss how digital technology will play a role in India’s energy transformation and in the related fields of urban mobility and livable mega-cities. I believe that digital technologies will contribute significantly to generating cleaner energy, using it more efficiently or avoiding energy usage altogether. The list of opportunities is long, ranging from predicting and controlling energy demand and supply, making the operations of power plants safer and more efficient, to optimizing supply chains, transportation, and mobility. India may even leapfrog the mature economies with their energy economy that is based on 100-year old structures of central energy generation and distributed consumption. Solar power and wind energy can be harvested decentrally and form a new bottom-up grid that mature countries are grappling with. At SAP, we have assembled teams that work on shaping the future of energy with next generation business practices that tie new energy networks together for safe, responsible, and affordable energy – and intelligent technologies will play a critical role here. I’m looking forward to continueing this work in collaboration with the leading energy players around the globe.

6 å¹´Very interesting point about India opportunity to leapfrog mature economies leveraging on renewables and decentralized grids, which also applies to most large countries suffering from underinvestment in infrastructure in SEA, Indonesia and Philippines on top of the list. This is challenging the traditional views on closing the energy gap.?
Great to see #SAPIndustries?#SAPENR actively participating in the foremost energy event #CERAWeek. Speak to our consulting team #SAPDigitalSvcs.
