India- Rising as A Global Semiconductor Powerhouse

India is rapidly strengthening its position as a global leader in the semiconductor industry. Under the visionary leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi, the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) was launched with a clear objective to create a vibrant semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India. The mission aims to promote innovation, facilitate trusted supply chains, and build a thriving startup ecosystem.

SEMICON India Programme: Building the Ecosystem

The SEMICON India Programme was approved with a financial outlay of INR 76,000 crore. It aims to provide incentives to companies involved in semiconductor fabs, compound semiconductors, display fabs, and packaging.

Global Collaborations: Strengthening Supply Chains

India’s semiconductor ambitions are further boosted by strategic global partnerships. Collaborations with the US, Japan, and the European Union are strengthening supply chains and accelerating the development of semiconductor infrastructure in the country. These alliances are vital to India’s emergence as a semiconductor hub.

SEMICON India 2024

The SEMICON India 2024 event, scheduled for 11-13th September 2024, will bring together over 600 global exhibitors and industry leaders to showcase India’s growing influence in the semiconductor sector. With strong government backing, a skilled workforce, and increasing investments, India is well on its way to becoming a global semiconductor superpower.

India Semiconductor Mission: A Strategic Initiative

The ISM aims to promote the growth of Silicon Semiconductor Fabs, Display Fabs, Compound Semiconductors, Sensors, and Semiconductor Packaging, among other areas. Its goal is to create a robust design and innovation ecosystem, positioning India as a global electronics manufacturing leader. The mission focuses on long-term strategies to develop manufacturing facilities, a trusted supply chain, and the necessary intellectual property to support semiconductor innovation.

The SEMICON India Programme, which supports companies in semiconductor designing, manufacturing, and packaging, is a foundation stone of India’s semiconductor strategy. The programme also focuses on boosting local innovation through the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme, which has supported 24 start-ups as of September 2024.

Benefit of ISM for India & its Citizens -

Become Semiconductor Powerhouse : Leading the way as a global hub, meeting the world's semiconductor needs.

Create Jobs and Economic Growth: Generate employment opportunities and boost economic development.

Drive Innovation: Nurture a culture of innovation and research in the semiconductor industry.

A Bright Future Ahead

International reports from KPMG, PwC, EY, and Deloitte highlight India’s growing semiconductor market. As per KPMG Report, “India has 20 percent of the world’s semiconductor design workforce, a rapidly evolving technology landscape and a thriving domestic market, all of which are conducive in building an indigenous semiconductor ecosystem.” With a strong talent pool, government support, and a vast domestic market, India is well-positioned to become a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing. As the country prepares to host SEMICON India 2024, the world will witness India’s pivotal role in shaping the future of semiconductors.
