Is India rearing HumanRobots or will it raise young citizens with AugmentedIntelligence
TL;DR: India's educational and parenting model needs to change from rearing #HumanRobots to raising the next gen of citizens with #AugmentedIntelligence.
The long story: I spoke at a successfully organized EduCafe career guidance conference in Dubai. A huge event that also featured an outdoor air conditioned tent hosting around 100 or more Universities and Colleges pitching for graduating students. The Student and Parent turnout at the event was in the thousands.
As I sat and took in the motivational talks and the resonance it had with parents - I was surprised to learn that even today, there is an emphasis on rearing human robots:
- Acing test scores.
- Avoiding TV/Ipads - the usual... and one suggestion that Ipads should be used in "open" areas such as classrooms so parents could be assured their wards are not accessing content in... ummm... "private"
- Short interludes for sponsors for "IIT" "JEE" tuition had powerpoint slides of 100s of 'ace' students that inspired me to coin the #HumanRobot phrase.
Guidance over Censorship:
As these alarm bells went off, I was forced to turn the direction of my talk around, at the last minute (channeling a dormant inner mentor) to advocate..
- Students/kids be given access to tech. It's the content we should help curate.
- Human Robots will have no jobs. Lawyers / Doctors could be annihilated by #NarrowAI ; we should be bringing up people with AugmentedIntelligence.
- Immersive Media is not for filmmaking and gaming alone. It's a medium of #VisualCommunication for communicating Ideas and R&D to peers and stakeholders in Med, engineering and remote collaboration.
- In a nation of over a billion, where have all the leaders gone? The well know ones are of course, heading Microsoft and Google... Others who stay back, are making money, running farms for HumanRobots to process the data of the first world.
