Analytical chemistry?deals with various analytical procedures to study different characteristics of drug.?It deals with?scientific and technical research on the creation of new drugs including methods of synthesis, results of pharmacological, biochemical studies.
This is done by various analytical techniques. These help in investigation of structure activity relationships in a compound which serves as guide for prediction of new compounds.
This includes techniques such as titration (acid-base, iodometric, complexometric), flame photometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy and many more.
Higher-level classes cover more advanced techniques such as ultraviolet spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance.
Earlier, this subject was in 2nd?year of the course, but as per new syllabus, it starts from 1st?year.
B. Pharm 1st?semester syllabus starts with basics such primary and secondary standards used for analysis.
Their formulation, method of preparation and properties. Various titration methods , indicators used are also studied including acid base titration, iodometric titration, redox titration, complexometric titration and precipitation titration.
Electrochemical methods of analysis such as potentiometry, polarography and conductometry are also learnt.
2nd semester, 3rd?semester and 4th?semester?chemistry is based on organic compounds, their synthesis, structure, classification, nomenclature, properties and reactions. Different functional groups and their properties are taught.
Practical syllabus includes identification of compounds and functional groups associated with it.
This forms the basis of medicinal chemistry where student learns about the synthesis of drugs. They also synthesize the same in practical classes.
7th?semester?students study various methods of Instrumental Analysis. It deals with the application of instrumental methods in qualitative and quantitative analysis of drugs.
The course is designed to impart a fundamental knowledge on the principles and instrumentation of various spectroscopic techniques.
It focuses on both theoretical and practical understanding of contemporary analytical tools used in drug testing.
