What did India achieve by going to the Moon?
While India and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) are basking in the glory of Chandrayaan-3’s success, we look at why landing on the Moon, specifically near the South Pole holds so much importance.
Before we analyze, it is worth noting that:
-?????????India is the 1st country to land near the Southern Pole of the lunar surface.
-?????????India is only the 4th country to land on the Moon.
Keeping that in mind, let us see how a mission like Chandrayaan benefits India.
Launching successful Space Missions is one of the biggest ways to determine how innovative and technologically advanced a country is. For ages, we’ve been hearing “ROCKET SCIENCE” which just emphasizes how complicated Rocket Science is. And being only the 4th country after the USA, Russia, and China to do so, it puts India in the league of global superpowers.
Chandrayaan-3’s successful landing on the Southern Pole has highlighted India’s technological expertise and perseverance to carry out a successful project that other nations could not. This not only showcases superior technology but also gives wings to the Make in India dream. Following this, the Indian Space-Tech companies shall get access to incoming global Investments, talent, and partnerships.

It is known that Chandrayaan-1 found traces of water-based ice back in 2008. If found in sufficient quantity, this can be a resource for future missions and spacecraft. Furthermore, this can be studied to explore possibilities or history of life on the lunar surface. Also, Helium-3, which is rare on Earth, is believed to be in abundance on the Moon which is known to provide safer nuclear energy.
While some may debate the need to put in INR. 615 Cr for a Space Mission, let us understand that this mission could potentially affect the future of mankind. To put this in perspective, the Indian movie Adipurush was made at a budget of INR 700 Cr. The Russian Luna-25 had a budget of approximately INR 1600 Cr. A well-known Hollywood movie Interstellar was released with a budget of approximately INR 1300 Cr. This just highlights India’s ability to carry out successful, time-bound, and cost-effective Space Missions.
Globally, India is a well-respected and acclaimed country. The success of a BIG Space Mission further asserts India’s capabilities and creates many new opportunities for partnerships, investments, technology transfers, and alliances.
The success of Chandrayaan-3 benefits India in the long term and puts India closer to being recognized as a superpower. ????
