India may outgrow China by 2019 but unemployment is rising, and more trending news
India is likely to reclaim the tag of the fastest-growing emerging economy next fiscal, according to the International Monetary Fund. The country's GDP will grow at 7.4% in FY19 and 7.8% the year after, ahead of China's sub-7%, IMF researchers say. China had nosed ahead in 2017, clocking 6.8% compared to India's 6.7%. India’s ability to reduce external borrowing, up industrial production and improve the rural economy are seen as growth drivers. Separately, a survey of global CEOs showed that India has overtaken Japan to emerge as the fifth most attractive investment destination.
More people could be without a job in 2018. Unemployment in India will rise by 3.5% in 2018 and 2019, in line with 2017, the International Labour Organisation predicts. The number of jobless Indians will increase to 18.6 million in 2018 and 19 million in 2019, from 18.3 million in 2017. Jobs created in the past two decades have been in sectors marred by uncertainty and vulnerability, the report suggests. Nearly 42% of the global workforce, ILO says, is either in vulnerable jobs or has irregular incomes and no social security.
Indians are an overzealous lot when it comes to sending 'Good Morning' texts. Those greetings are making one in three smartphones run out of space every day compared with one in 10 in the US, The Wall Street Journal reports. Where are these cheery messages coming from? There’s been a 10-fold spike in the number of Google searches for “Good Morning images” over the last five years. Instant messaging app WhatsApp and visual search platform Pinterest have come up with a workaround by adding a status message and a dedicated section, respectively.
Browsing the internet at 30,000 feet is going to be prohibitively expensive. The Times of India reports that flyers may have to shell out 20-30% of the fare for 30-60 minutes of inflight connectivity. That's because airlines have to make hefty payments to satellite telecom players like Inmarsat. Low-cost carriers are, therefore, unlikely to offer connectivity. In fact, there aren't many takers for in-flight internet even on international routes, the report says. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India recently gave its go-ahead, with riders, for in-flight calling and internet usage.
The iPhone X may be consigned to history as early as mid-2018. MacRumors reports, citing acclaimed KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, that tepid demand in China may prompt Apple to dump the high-end model ahead of a new version later this year. Apple won't cut the iPhone X's price as this would cannibalise sales of its lower-priced products. "Additionally, selling iPhone X at a lower price may impact shipments of the new 6.1-inch LCD iPhone in 2H18," Kuo said. Apple’s revenue growth in India hit a six-year low in FY17, dragged down by demonetisation.
Idea of the Day: “Like so many entrepreneurs, I have treated my body as if I’m invincible for the entirety of my startup life,” says Leila Janah, founder and CEO of Samasource and LXMI. But the stress recently pushed her to the brink — and she doesn’t want others to find themselves in the same situation.
“The moral of my story: don’t be a fool. Good health is your most important life and work goal. Everything else depends on it. And when you lose it, as I did, … you realize how very precious your one body is, and how much care it deserves.”
