India is heading in the correct direction

Today has been a delightful day. I received my renewed Driving Licence at my residence address. I am sure many Indians may have received their renewed driving licenses at their doorsteps, in the recent past.

For many years, we #Indians were used to (and abused too!) spending unproductive hours and sometimes a lifetime, running from pillar to post, in #government #offices. I feel bad seeing many citizens, young to old, wait endlessly in government offices just to meet the officials during working hours. Many officials, even to date, behave arrogantly, with a sense of entitlement, block rightful services and brazenly extort money.

Even paying routine utility bills was at the mercy of the official at the counter. Many of us remember how many human centuries were wasted, standing in queue to pay monthly utility bills. An acquaintance said that he had to bribe the official at the counter, even to pay the property tax. For us citizens, Bharat Bill Pay Service (#BBPS) from NPCI came as a boon. With BBPS, we can pay our bills online. Even better is that BBPS is designed as an open platform that payments could be made with several instruments (cards, net banking, UPI...) on multiple apps.

I am delighted that I did not have to bribe any official for renewing my driving licence. To me, this is a proof that #India is heading in the correct direction. There are innumerable steps to take in this direction. Repairing the government departments (both central and state), eliminating opportunities for extortion and corruption (both of which were intentionally institutionalized by earlier governments), plugging the legal loopholes, getting citizens into formal economy through Unified Payments Interface #UPI and Goods & Services Tax #GST - all these are ushering in #grassroots #transformation in India. Hey, we have begun! I hope these changes are irreversible, unless some evil forces take over the country again.

I will be happier when all the government services are delivered to citizens promptly, without #bribe or #extortion. Governments in many countries may have had vested interests in keeping their citizens ignorant (with intentional information asymmetry and opacity) and poor. I have always believed that governments, education and technology should go to people and not the other way. Corrupt government entities like Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (#BBMP), the Sub Registrar Offices (land record offices) and every government office of India, state and central, should not only be rid of corruption and extortion, but the criminal officials should also be brought to justice.

#atmanirbharbharat (Self reliant India) should also mean that no citizen is held to ransom by any criminal official of the government or by any criminal elected representative of the people. We will truly become #atmanirbhar (self reliant), then.

Personal note:

To recollect, my dad and I were extorted by the BBMP officials Vinod Kumar, his team members Narendra Kumar and Mukesh, when we applied to get BBMP no-objection certificate, for a residence sanitary connection. Such officials should be punished and their ill-gotten wealth should be confiscated by the nation.

Thank you Shri Narendra Modi the honourable #Prime #Minister BioPharma BoardRoom , Shri Nitin Gadkari , Ministry of Road Transport & Highways - India for my hassle-free renewal of driving licence. I hope other government entities are getting cleaned up too.

well said Venkatesh Krishnamurthy ... Some years back when there were no smart phones, these sarkari Babus used to exploit people. UPI is a bliss with various services getting added every day. A couple of years from now, dependency on these physical billing systems will come down atleast by 80% going by the way UPI is taking over the conventional payment systems..Good to see these improvements in our day to day life. By the way congratulations on your driving licence renewal

Hi Venaktesh, Great post and respect to acknowledge improvements happening and to bring it people's notice. Long back this started with Demonetization, GST rollout and many other initiatives etc. While people can debate for the trouble that may caused temporarily, the direction was clear and must applaud to even to try such a big steps to overcome corruptness in our system and grass rooted long since. Let's practice to say NO TO BRIBE and find ways where such services are being done online / through services like these without hassles rather than going and being extorted. Share such developments or services for govt services etc for us. Thanks again. Keep writing ??

Absolutely, I second your thoughts. Utilising technology for the common good is time saving, convenient and elegant. Even digital transactions have increased and buyers don’t have to wait for change. Even street hawkers are accepting digital transactions in a place like shimoga today. I am proud that India is in the right direction.
