Hello solutions seekers! ?

This is just a small note to say thank you for reading The Solutionists.

In many ways, telling these stories and sharing them within our circles helps to elevate the work of young people who are fighting to make our world a better place.

As a one-woman band, it's been encouraging to see more and more people subscribe to the newsletter and reach out to share new stories and feedback about this publication.

The best part of my work is talking about change and telling stories from innovators who are making a difference. Feel inspired, stay informed, and be encouraged that there is positive change in our world, and it's not all doom and gloom.

Thank you for being solution seekers!

Teenage Tobacco Use Drops ???? ??

Teenage use of tobacco and e-cigarettes in the US is at its lowest in 25 years. ??

A survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey showed a 20% drop from last year. The number of middle and high school students using e-cigarettes has fallen dramatically, marking a significant milestone in the fight against youth tobacco use.

IMG: BBC | GETTY

The survey estimated that 2.25 million middle and high school students in America were using tobacco products—a significant drop from 2.8 million in 2023.

The CDC credited this record decline largely to fewer teens using e-cigarettes, with 1.63 million reporting use in 2024, down from 2.13 million in 2023. Cigarette smoking also hit an all-time low, with just 1.4% of students saying they smoked this year.

A Malaria Free Egypt! ????

Egypt has officially been declared malaria-free by the World Health Organization. The Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "Malaria is as old as Egyptian civilisation, but the disease that once plagued the pharaohs is now part of history." ??

Egypt is the third country to be awarded a malaria-free certification in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, following the United Arab Emirates and Morocco, and the first since 2010. Globally, a total of 44 countries and 1 territory have reached this milestone.

This achievement comes nearly a century after Egypt first began its fight to eradicate the deadly mosquito-borne disease. Through relentless efforts and commitment, the nation has now eliminated malaria, marking a significant victory in global public health. ??????

AI Saving Elephants In India ???? ??

Talk about a wild rescue!

AI technology helped stop a train in Assam, in northeastern India, just in time to save a herd of 60 wild elephants crossing the tracks!

On the night, the train was speeding through a dense forest when the AI alert kicked in. The quick-thinking driver and his assistant said they hit the emergency brakes after spotting the massive herd.

Thanks to this high-tech heroics, disaster was averted, and the elephants continued their journey unharmed. Assam is known for its wildlife so this could help save lots of animals in the future.

The East Central railways saved the lives of 414 elephants in 2023, and 383 elephants till October 16 this year since January.

Taking Aid To Rural Morocco ????

After a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook Morocco in September, a friendly online platform stepped up to support victims and remote mountain communities.

A visionary named Boutrik took it upon himself to make a difference. He created Seisme Maroc Data, an innovative online database designed to streamline relief efforts in the hardest-hit regions.

It's a bilingual [Arabic-French] interactive online database that provides information and can geo-map the disaster-stricken areas.

The earthquake struck an area larger than Switzerland, affecting six provinces in one night. It claimed thousands of lives, injured many more. Reports also show it left more than 2,000 villages—about one-third of those in the High Atlas Mountains—destroyed.

Within days, Boutrik’s database had apparently became essential, compiling data on 123 regions, hundreds of villages, and 54 relief organisations. It's said to have provided real-time updates for coordinating rescue missions. https://reasonstobecheerful.world/morocco-earthquake-digital-database-relief-efforts/
