India Elections 2024: Phase 4

As voting begins across 10 states and union territories for Phase 4 of the India Elections 2024, we break down key disorder trends in the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, all of whose constituencies will head to the polls on 13 May.?

In Telangana, one of the largest rice producers in India, ACLED data show that demonstrations by farmers account for nearly a quarter of all demonstrations in the state in 2024. Their demands range from better irrigation services to crop procurement at a guaranteed price.

In Andhra Pradesh, where state legislature elections will be held simultaneously, the rivalry between the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) escalated after Jagan Reddy, the chief minister from the YSRCP, was injured in a stone pelting incident during a rally on 13 April.

Even as a police investigation was launched, the YSRCP blamed the TDP. ACLED records at least 15 instances of violence between supporters of the two parties since the beginning of 2024, nearly half of which occurred after the stone pelting incident.
