India election wraps up, East Asia powers meet, HK national security verdict

A Hong Kong court is set to deliver its verdict in the city's biggest national security case, while South Korea, Japan and China will hold a trilateral summit with business ties and security tensions on the agenda during the closely watched talks.

MONDAY

East Asia powers meet

South Korea, Japan and China hold their first trilateral summit in nearly four and a half years . South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will host Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Seoul for talks expected to focus on business, the economy and other issues of common concern, including climate change.

The last such meeting, in December 2019, came shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic and none of the three men were in their current positions at the time. The gathering, which is expected to include some bilateral meetings on Sunday as well, comes at a time of rising regional tensions in the aftermath of Taiwan's presidential election, North Korea's missile development and belligerence, and increased security cooperation with the U.S. by Seoul and Tokyo.

TUESDAY

OECD chief visits Indonesia

Mathias Cormann, secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), visits Jakarta after Indonesia was granted accession status to the Paris-based organization with its eye on full membership. Indonesian President Joko Widodo is scheduled to meet Cormann to discuss the steps for Indonesia's joining the 38-nation club. The Southeast Asian country aims to gain full membership within three years .

Semicon Southeast Asia returns to Kuala Lumpur

The electronics industry trade show -- part of a series that also includes shows in Japan, China, South Korea, Europe and the U.S. -- brings together hundreds of exhibitors from across the chip supply chain. The three-day event in the Malaysian capital is expected to draw as many as 20,000 attendees, according to organizers.

THURSDAY

Verdict in landmark Hong Kong national security trial

A Hong Kong court convenes ahead of an expected ruling in the city's largest national security case, with a group of prominent pro-democracy figures facing up to life in prison if convicted. The 16 defendants are among 47 people charged in February 2021 with conspiracy to commit subversion for holding an unofficial primary election. The other 31 have already pleaded guilty. The case is being closely watched by foreign diplomats, political observers and rights groups. Most of the defendants were denied bail and have been held behind bars since their arrests more than three years ago.

FRIDAY

Indian GDP

India releases its latest GDP figures, with the economy on track for an expansion of at least 8% in the first three months of the year, according to official estimates. Asia's third-largest economy grew 8.4% in the October to December quarter , far exceeding economists' expectations, thanks to brisk manufacturing and construction.

Shangri-La Dialogue

Leaders and defense ministers from Asian and European countries as well as the U.S. will gather in Singapore for the three-day security forum, hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a U.K.-based think tank. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will deliver a keynote speech at the event, where governments will also hold bilateral talks on the sidelines.

Indian elections wrap up

India kicks off the last stage of six-week national elections that saw 970 million people eligible to vote across the world's biggest democracy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are widely expected to emerge victorious. But how many of the country's 543 parliamentary seats they secure will be known when official results are released on June 4.
