This represents an 18-fold increase compared to the capabilities of 4G networks, where the median speed hovers around a modest 16.05 Mbps. The nation’s upward trajectory in 5G rankings is fueled by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel’s large-scale and swift deployment across the country.

Availability and Adoption

India witnessed a significant rise in 5G availability, soaring from 28.1% in Q1 to 52.0% in Q4 2023. Reliance Jio led the charge with an availability share of 68.8%, while Airtel contributed 30.4%.

Moreover, the growth of 5G-capable smartphones played a pivotal role. In 2023, 52% of all smartphones shipped were 5G-enabled, further propelling the adoption of this advanced technology.

Enhanced Experience

The impact of 5G extends beyond mere numbers. Video streaming and mobile gaming experiences have undergone a transformation on India’s 5G networks. Both Jio and Airtel have excelled in offering faster video start times and reduced latency. Jio achieved an impressive latency of 77ms, while Airtel reported 92ms. When it comes to video start times, Jio’s network clocked in at 1.14 seconds, outperforming Airtel’s 1.99 seconds.

5G brings about a positive impact on Net Promoter Scores.

The Net Promoter Score (NPS) serves as a metric to measure customer loyalty and satisfaction, providing insights into overall customer experience.

It segments users into three categories: Detractors (scoring between 0-6), Passives (scoring 7-8), and Promoters (scoring 9-10). Calculated as the percentage of Promoters minus the percentage of Detractors, the NPS ranges from -100 to 100, serving as a pivotal indicator of customer sentiment and brand advocacy.

Rapid Deployment

By December 2023, India boasted over 400,000 operational 5G base stations across the country, a substantial increase from January of the same year

This rapid nationwide deployment underscores the commitment of Indian operators to usher in the 5G era.

The stark difference between 5G and 4G speeds is evident. In Q4 2023, the median download speed for 5G was 301.86 Mbps, while 4G lagged far behind at 16.05 Mbps. Additionally, less than 10% of 5G users experienced speeds merely twice as fast as the median 4G download speed, highlighting the substantial performance enhancement that 5G offers.

Future Prospects

Due to the extensive and rapid expansion efforts of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, throughout the nation, India has ascended to the ranks of the top 14 markets globally, boasting the swiftest reported median download speeds for 5G.

The momentum continues as Vodafone Idea gears up to launch its 5G services by mid-2024, promising further advancements in India’s 5G landscape. bWith improved speeds, availability, and transformative experiences, India is poised to make its mark on the global 5G stage.
