INDIA: THE POTENTIAL OF RECYCLING WATER AND WASTE – MYTH AND REALITY IN ACHIEVING A CIRCULAR ECONOMY

From soil to water at Arendalsuka

?

Soil and water are the?most important natural resources?that meet all human needs, and protect the environment and civilization.?Last year MP Himanshu Gulati and DMI gathered MPs, a diverse group of experts, thought leaders, prominent personalities and passionate individuals who share a common goal: to explore innovative ideas, exchange knowledge, and foster collaboration in our collective mission to save soil.

?

Sadhguru?– The Founder of the Isha Foundation, Sadhguru is a Yogi, mystic and visionary. He is ranked amongst the fifty most influential people in India. Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev is one of the most prominent contemporary spiritual voices, and is loved by millions around the world. An Indian yogi and spiritual leader, his voice is far-reaching to both Western and Eastern audiences.

?

Sadhguru?is urging:

1) every government to put soil management on the national agenda, and

2) every person to ask their elected representatives to put it on their local agenda.

?

Through the panel discussion, we aimed to deepen our understanding of the intricate web of life within soil, its crucial role in supporting food production, mitigating climate change, and maintaining biodiversity.?

?

A few take aways:

?

  • Agricultural soils are recommended to have a minimum of 3-6% soil organic matter to be considered soil. Absence of organic matter leads to desertification. The countries with the best soil are at <2% already.
  • As we continue to pull more nutrients out of the soil, it impacts the quality of the nutrition in the food that is grown. This in turn impacts not just physical health, but also mental health.
  • The nation is a human construct that we are taking way too seriously. Of course, there are benefits to having nations, but the global challenges we are facing today need us to re-orient our minds and look beyond the constricting concept of nation-states, in order to work together to really save our soil.
  • 1.7 billion people are expected to face crises of water and food. Where are they going to go? Naturally to places that have water and food. There won't be enough armies in the world to stop the migration of 1.7 billion people. This impacts every country - both in developed and developing nations.
  • We need to look beyond cash crops such as wheat and rice. The UN has declared 2023 as the Year of Millets, and India is taking this very seriously. Millets have more nutrition, and also use less resources such as water to grow.
  • The next generation of young people are not interested in farming.?

Sharing a few glimses below:

This year we are looking forward to talking about water at Arendalsuka.?

HISTORISK HANDELSAVTALE MED INDIA–HVA BETYR DETTE FOR NORSK EKSPORT, N?RING OG DET GR?NNE SKIFTET?

?

?

Dag:?Onsdag 14.8 2024? Tid:?14:00 - 15:30? Sted:?Clarion Hotel Tyholmen?

?

?

Sentrale sp?rsm?l under seminaret vil v?re:

Your carefully curated event synopsis highlights a crucial intersection: India's pursuit of a circular economy through water and waste recycling. India's history with resource management is complex, marked by periods of both innovation and strain. The Indus Valley Civilization, for example, showcased sophisticated water management systems millennia ago. Yet, today, rapid urbanization and industrialization place immense pressure on these resources. The participation of government stakeholders, researchers like those at the Indo Nordic Water Forum, and private sector players suggests a multi-pronged approach is necessary. Given the scale of India's population and its economic aspirations, will this event serve as a catalyst for replicating successful models from other nations grappling with similar challenges? What specific policy frameworks or technological advancements could bridge the gap between aspiration and tangible results in achieving a truly circular economy in India?
