India has climbed 11 ranks in the Network Readiness Index 2024 (NRI 2024), securing the 49th spot globally, with its score improving from 49.93 in 2023 to 53.63 in 2024, as per the Portulans Institute. The report highlights India's leadership in key indicators such as AI scientific publications, AI talent concentration, ICT services exports, FTTH Internet subscriptions, and mobile broadband internet traffic. Covering 133 economies across four pillars—technology, people, governance, and impact—the report underscores India's significant advancements in technological innovation and digital transformation. The Ministry of Communications credits these achievements to strategic investments and initiatives, including the expansion of broadband access and robust telecommunication infrastructure.
India's progress in the telecom sector over the past decade has been remarkable, with tele-density rising from 75.2% to 84.69%, wireless connections reaching 119 crore, and internet subscribers increasing from 25.1 crore to 94.4 crore. The launch of 5G in 2022 has bolstered India’s global mobile broadband ranking from 118 to 15, showcasing rapid digital growth. Under the "Digital India" initiative and the "Bharat 6G Vision," India aims to position itself as a leader in future telecom technologies, solidifying its status as a global hub for digital innovation and connectivity.
