Independence Thoughts
From this morning it appears we will live in a country where there are British people and "the other". Nothing good will come of that. The sun will come up, we will go to work, city workers will make money from the volatility, we will continue to trade, we will continue to dream of victory in the Euros, we will adjust, we will accept any economic consequences but petty nationalism will be emboldened. If you voted remain be sure to denounce the whisper from the shadows. Deny the voice that calmly and rationally argues out should really mean "they" get out. If things become difficult in the coming months and years don't blame "the others" amongst us. Democracy is glorious but demagoguery hides within its folds. Independence is a valid path, as was the desire to be part of a community. Nationalism is a different beast. Remember we voted for independence but some voted for nationalism. In the coming months and years they will incrementally try to define what it is to be British and it will not include "the others". It is not inevitable, it can be quashed but it shouldn't be ignored. Stamp on it. Stand up to it in pub, in the cafeteria and at the school gate. Defend your independence without asserting nationality trumps humanity. Maybe I should get some sleep now but I wish to wake up in a country that accepts its decision, its consequences, and retains its humanity and tolerance - our true heritage. Today was not a victory. It was a decision fairly taken. All who took part were decent, ordinary and real people - not just those who voted for the winning cause.
