Independence Series Part 1: Embracing Our History: A Personal Journey Through African American Heritage ????

Since my early childhood, I’ve been captivated by my history, culture, and homeland, Africa. Watching “Roots” on television left me angry for weeks, resonating deeply with the injustices faced by Kunta Kinte and our ancestors under the cruelty of slavery. Sadly, African history was seldom encouraged in my education. There’s always been an emptiness, a yearning to understand who I am, where I come from, and why slavery ever existed. More painfully, why, even 250 years after its abolishment, African Americans are still despised, mistreated, and discriminated against.

As an adult, I’ve made it my mission to study our history, embrace our culture, and pass on this legacy to my children and grandchildren. Turning 62 this year, I’m acutely aware that the average lifespan of a Black man in America is 76.1 years. It underscores the urgency of ensuring that future generations know their history and understand the complexities of the world we navigate today.

In this 10-part series, “Unveiling Our Heritage: A Personal Journey Through African American History,” we embark on a profound exploration. From the paradox of celebrating American independence while perpetuating slavery to contemporary dialogues on economic justice, each episode delves into pivotal moments and enduring challenges faced by our community.
