The increasing use of PVC in sports: cycling

PVC plays an essential role in #cycling. It is used for many of the parts that make up a #bicycle, and for many biking products used by amateurs and professional racers. First of all, for saddles: it ensures the comfort needed in all type of races and can endure daily use and natural elements, year after year, thanks to its proven durability.

When it comes to handlebar grips, the needs are even more: they must be safe, comfortable, and able to withstand years of use outdoors. Flexible PVC is a key material for handlebar grips, and due to the material’s versatility, any imaginable colour and shape can be created.

Next on our list are rim tapes. Punctures are a constant threat for cyclists. To minimise the risk of getting a flat tyre, PVC rim tape runs around your #bike’s wheel to cover spoke holes and protect the inner tube from punctures.

Other bike’s components, such as brakes and gears, also depend on PVC: it is the most used plastic for cables, and it is hence used on bike as well. Cycling makes use of the material’s flexibility and long-life for these cables, and for brake levers: the housing and lever are often made from PVC, a long-lasting plastic that ensures reliability for many years of daily use.

Finally, a fundamental part of most city bikes are bike bags: whether they’re carrying a school bag, groceries, work computer or survival gear for trailblazing, PVC bicycle bags guarantee protection from rain and snow, as they are water-proof and very durable. Some of the most well-known brands even use upcycled tarps from trucks for bags: after spending years on Europe’s highways, they get a second life on the bike lane.
