The country of elks and mountains is bustling with activity; there has been a significant rise in work permits issued in Sweden during the first five months of 2024, with over 11,700 permits being issued —a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
A significant increase from 2023
Sweden has issued 11,760 work permits between January and May 2024, which is a significant increase from the 8,180 work permits granted during the same period in 2023. The labor shortages can be seen across various sectors, such as education, healthcare, IT, and construction. The highest number of work permits were issued for occupations requiring university degrees and other roles demanding significant expertise, which signifies a need for skilled labor.
Improvements in processing time
In response to these demands, the Swedish Migration Agency implemented a new processing model, which significantly reduced the waiting period for highly qualified workers to under 30 days.
We are happy that the efforts had an effect and that we can offer a service and a way of working that contributes to strengthening Sweden’s competitiveness. - Maria Mindhammar, general director of Migration Agency

A paradoxical trend
There is something to be said about this surge in permits issued, when the unemployment rate has simultaneously risen to 8.0% and is expected to increase further. However, this paradox shows the stark contrast between the availability of workers, and what is actually needed: foreign talent to fill critical gaps.
Conclusion
This proactive approach to addressing labor shortages by shortening the work permit process ,is a positive step towards strengthening the Swedish labour market and maintaining economic competitiveness. For foreign professionals, these changes also presents valuable opportunities.
