Today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced the positive news of a 15% salary increase for civil servants in the management and professional category, as well as a 7% raise for those in upper management positions.
I believe, the increasing of civil servants’ salary can significantly boost the economic growth and stability. An optimistic outlook on this issue reveals that higher salaries for civil servants can stimulate consumer spending, enhance public service quality, and foster a more motivated public service.
Firstly, a salary increase for civil servants directly translates into increased disposable income for a sizable segment of the population. Majority of the civil servants belong to the middle-income bracket, and as their salaries rise, they are more likely to spend on essential goods and services.
This increase in consumer spending can create a ripple effect throughout the economy. As local businesses experience higher sales, they may respond by hiring additional staff or increasing their inventory, thereby reducing unemployment and fostering a more vibrant market.
Enhanced economic activity can catalyse a cycle of growth, generating not only direct revenues for businesses but also increasing tax revenues for governments, which can then be reinvested into essential public services and infrastructure.

Secondly, higher salary for civil servants can lead to improved public service delivery. With higher salaries, the government can attract and retain skilled professionals in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and public safety.
A motivated and well-compensated workforce is likely to increase productivity and efficiency. For example, teachers and healthcare workers who feel valued are more inclined to provide better services, which ultimately enhances the quality of life for citizens. This improved service delivery can stimulate public trust in government institutions, fostering a cohesive society and reinforcing the social contract between citizens and their government.
Furthermore, a salary increase can act as a catalyst for positive working culture. When employees feel that their contributions are recognised through fair compensation, morale and job satisfaction increase, leading to lower turnover rates. This stability not only harnesses experience but also reduces the costs associated with recruiting and training new employees.
In other words, to foster a remarkable economic growth and stability for both the country and rakyat, the salary increase must be transformed into real economic activities through spending and investment, paving the way for a brighter financial future rather than relying on debt-based approaches.
In conclusion, civil servants’ salary increase should be viewed not merely as “an expense but as a strategic investment” in the economy. By boosting consumer spending, enhancing public service quality, and fostering a motivated workforce, such increases can lead to a more dynamic economy and a more equitable society. Embracing this approach can pave the way for sustainable growth, supporting both civil servants and the rakyat they serve. InsyaALLAH.

6 个月This is an insightful take on the potential benefits of a salary increase for civil servants, and while I agree that it can boost economic growth, there is a flip side that we should consider. If not managed well, the inflationary pressure from increased spending could negate some of the benefits you mentioned.
